Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has cast some doubt on Travis Kelce’s post-retirement ambitions to become an NFL commentator. Reid instead suggested he has the makings of a future coach.

Despite being in his 12th season with the Chiefs and showing no signs of slowing down at 34, Kelce has openly discussed life after football on his New Heights podcast with brother Jason. The three-time Super Bowl champion expressed his desire to move into broadcasting, stating: “I want to broadcast when I’m done playing.”

When pressed by his sibling about what aspect of broadcasting he was interested in, Travis confidently replied that he sees himself calling games, even practicing his announcer voice during the podcast, much to his brother’s amusement.

“I want to be right here and tell them about the game, the old ball coach, ladies and gentlemen,” he said. “I want to do that. I wanna be the talking head that calls the games.”

However, Reid, who brought Kelce to the Chiefs in the 2013 NFL Draft, believes he has the potential to excel in coaching. In a conversation with Colin Cowherd on FOX Sports, Reid praised Kelce’s understanding of the game and acknowledged giving him a degree of freedom due to their long-standing relationship.

He said: “Yeah, I’d probably say yes, to be honest with you, because I’ve been around him for so long. We’ve had him my whole duration here.

“I know where he’s at physically, mentally, I know what he can do in games. We try to utilize him. I also know what’s around him, which helps him because for a while there, we were banged up a little bit and guys were trying to learn.

“He was being double-teamed, and that wasn’t as good for him. But Travis would be a heck of a football coach. He’s able to get up there and explain things and teach these young guys exactly what he sees and feels. Not that they all have that same talent, but he’s got a good feel for the game.”

The pair are set to strive for their fourth Super Bowl victory together against the Philadelphia Eagles next Sunday, potentially making NFL history with the first three-peat.
