Arsenal receives a ‘ridiculous’ handball ruling against Liverpool.
Arsenal gets a new handball and penalty ruling against Liverpool – ‘Absurd decision’
Arsenal has been given a new ruling regarding a possible handball by Dominik Szoboszlai during their Premier League loss to Liverpool.
The Hungarian player was also part of another significant moment in the match, as his stunning free-kick ultimately determined the result.
The match at Anfield was undoubtedly tense, with both teams clearly eager to avoid defeat; if a winner was to emerge, it would have to be through a stroke of brilliance.
That brilliance came in the 83rd minute when Szoboszlai’s powerful shot from approximately 30 yards sailed past Arsenal’s goalkeeper, David Raya.
In a press conference discussing the match, Arteta remarked: “I believe we raised the level of play and our dominance to a point where they had to respond, which they did, particularly from the 60th to the 78th minute.
At that point, it was evident that there were no margins in the game, and when that occurs, the outcome is often determined in two ways.
“Firstly, through an individual mistake, and secondly, through a moment of magic. We created an incredible moment that won us the game, and that was the key difference, nothing more.”
Earlier in the match, Arsenal felt they should have been awarded a penalty when a long throw-in seemed to hit the top of Szoboszlai’s arm.
Gary Neville, providing co-commentary, and former Premier League referee Mike Dean both shared their immediate reactions to the incident.
“Honestly, I wouldn’t want that [penalty] given against me, especially when there are so many bodies in front of you and visibility is limited. It does make contact with his upper arm,” Neville commented.
Dean added: “It’s in that area where you question whether it’s a red zone or a blue zone. To be fair, the ball traveled a significant distance.
His arm was never directed towards the ball. The ball simply struck him, and in my opinion, the on-field decision was correct.”
Neville responded: “I believe that if he had a clear view of the ball and it struck his arm, it would be a penalty.
However, considering there are four or five players in front of him and the ball comes over them – it’s impossible to see it.”
The situation has calmed down since that intense moment, and a definitive opinion has been expressed by another former referee, Dermot Gallagher.
“Everyone would have been shocked if a penalty had been awarded for that,” he stated during his appearance on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch.
“Firstly, it hit the upper part of his arm. Secondly, it came over his head. His arms are in the position you would expect them to be at that moment.”
Jay Bothroyd was even more certain that a penalty should not have been awarded. He remarked: “That would be an absurd decision if he called that! If he had given that, there would have been an outcry.”
