Randi Mahomes, mother of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, took to social media on Monday to share a family update and ask for prayers and support amid a challenging time for a family member.
On her Instagram Stories, the Mahomes matriarch shared a photo of herself carrying a baby boy named Luka. Based on Mahomes’ message, the young Luka is the grandson of one of her cousins.
Unfortunately, the child is dealing with a cancer called neuroblastoma and is currently undergoing chemotherapy.
According to Mayo Clinic, neuroblastoma “is a cancer that starts in cells called neuroblasts” — which are “immature nerve cells” found in “several areas of the body.” It usually affects children aged five years or younger.
“Please join me in continuing to pray for my cousin’s grandson,” Mahomes wrote. “Sweet Luka is still fighting Stage L2 intermediate neuroblastoma. He is undergoing chemo and fighting hard. Please pray for this sweet family as they are going through one of the hardest trials of their lives.”

Randi Mahomes also shared a link to the GoFundMe campaign started for Luka to help spread the word about the baby’s condition and seek help as he continues to fight the disease.
The GoFundMe campaign, which aims to raise $4,500 in donations, details Luka’s illness and what led to his diagnosis.
“Luka was a perfectly healthy baby boy up until the day he turned 8 months old,” the post stated. “This long journey started when he aspirated on a little pool water while on vacation. His mother, who is an ICU nurse, noticed his breathing was a little fast a few days after and took him to his pediatrician thinking he may have developed pneumonia. No one could have prepared them for what came next.”
