It was a quiet beginning to the 2025 MLB Draft for the Virginia Tech baseball program, but it ended with a flurry of picks. At the backend of the draft, the Hokies had four members of the 2025 team selected, including former pitcher Griffin Stieg, who transferred to Alabama earlier this month, picked.

Now, it remains to be seen if any of the picks choose to sign, and the big one is Jared Davis, who was picked by the Athletics. If he decides to go pro, which wouldn’t be surprising, then that would leave a big hole on the roster and multiple positions next season for John Szefc.

After the draft concluded, MLB teams got busy signing players to undrafted free agent contracts, and it didn’t take long for one Hokies player to sign a deal. It leaves a void on the roster that many people saw coming.

File this under I didn’t see this coming. Catcher/designated hitter David McCann signed a free agent deal with the New York Yankees, which is a dream for a kid who grew up in Easton, Conn., and played at Avon Old Farms School.

This past season for the Hokies, he slashed .275/.385/.569 with 11 home runs, 12 doubles, and 27 RBIs. In his career in Blacksburg, he slashed .273/.395/.571 with 20 doubles, 22 home runs, and drove in 56.

This could be a devastating loss for Szefc for next season as McCann was seen as the one catcher that would be back for Virginia Tech and it wouldn not have been surprising to see Henry Crooke leave. Now, that may still happen, and it does, it really puts the Hokies in a bind for next season behind the plate.
