Chiefs wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins’ first taste of Kansas City barbecue was so good, he called his mother to talk about the experience.
Hopkins, who was acquired last month in a trade with the Tennessee Titans, may have changed his opinion of where to get the best barbecue in the country.
As he noted in a TikTok video, Hopkins was born in South Carolina, “which I think has the best barbecue.”
@deandrehopkins This was my first and the bar is high! What BBQ spot should I try next? 👀 #kansascity #foodreviews #bbq
Hopkins made that observation as he was about to try what Kansas City has to offer. Hopkins’ first stop was at Gates Bar-B-Q, one of the legendary restaurants in Kansas City.
Hopkins shared a video of his meal, which included ribs, chopped brisket and a burnt-end sandwich. He gave the latter a 10.
At the end of the video, Hopkins made a special phone call.
“Hey Ma, I think I just had the best barbecue,” said Hopkins, who offered a long pause and finished with, “in a long time.”
You’re not in Tennessee anymore, DeAndre.
Hopkins wrote this with the video: “This was my first and the bar is high! What BBQ spot should I try next?”
As you can imagine, people had many suggestions for his next stop. Here are some of the more than a thousand comments.
“Slaps, Q39, joes In that order!”
“Jack Stacks downtown KC, MO”
“Just try them all. Rinse, repeat.”
“BB’s lawnside BBQ! One of the best and under appreciated spots in town!”
“Try Arthur Bryants next. They’re the original KC bbq joint.”
“Oh, Woodyards is one I forget about sometimes”
“LC’s Bar-B-Q. Tight. Old school. burnt ends”
Hopkins responded to that LC’s suggestion by writing: “I’ll let ya know how it go”
