Chiefs QB All but Gone in 2025 After OTA Silence

During the Patrick Mahomes era, the Kansas City Chiefs had an ever-changing group of backup quarterbacks. From Chad Henne and Matt Moore to Blaine Gabbert and Carson Wentz, the Chiefs relied on veteran signal-callers to back Mahomes up. Fortunately, they didn’t have to go through an extended period of Mahomes’ absence over the years and never needed to trust any of these names to carry the offensive load.

This time around, the Chiefs may have the best QB2 Mahomes has ever had. Gardner Minshew is one of the more qualified backup quarterbacks in the league and has his role set in stone. There hasn’t been much noise from OTAs about QB competition, suggesting that there may be a veteran Chiefs QB leaving Kansas City before the season.

Chris Oladokun’s Time in Kansas City May Be Coming to an End

Behind Minshew, there are Bailey Zappe and Chris Oladokun waiting for their turn in the quarterback pecking order. Zappe signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs in the offseason and is a more proven NFL player than Oladokun, having had stints as a starter in New England. It’s safe to assume that he would be ahead of Oladokun in the rotation.

Even though Oladokun has been with the Chiefs since 2022, his time in Kansas City may end with this revamped QB room. Oladokun spent time on the practice squad over the last three years and had a role as the third-string quarterback. His odds of cracking the roster this season were always a long shot. The fact that fans didn’t hear much about him during OTAs likely means that he is firmly the QB4 as we head towards the mandatory minicamp.

With Minshew and Zappe in the mix, the Chiefs must feel pretty good about their quarterback depth. There isn’t much of a reason to keep Oladokun around. The 27-year-old will likely be cut this summer and try to land somewhere else as a third-string quarterback.
