Jason Varitek’s Exchange with Rafael Devers Draws Attention After Historic Struggles

There’s been no secret that the Boston Red Sox are off to a sluggish start at the plate. While it’s still early in the season with over 150 games remaining, the struggles have been highlighted by their superstar, Rafael Devers.

Devers has had an eventful offseason, which seems to have contributed to his historically bad start to the year. On Jan. 11, 2023, he signed a massive 10-year, $313 million extension. However, after the signing of Alex Bregman, Red Sox manager Alex Cora announced that Devers would be moving from third base to designated hitter. The position change didn’t sit well with the 28-year-old star.

Now, having accepted the change, Devers is off to one of the worst starts in MLB history. After striking out 10 times in the Red Sox’s first three games, marking the most in the sport’s history, he has struck out 12 times in just 16 at-bats through four games and is still without a hit.

Following the Red Sox’s third consecutive loss on Sunday, Devers was visibly distraught in the dugout. While sitting alone on the bench, Red Sox game-planning coordinator and legendary former catcher Jason Varitek was seen consoling him.

“Cry more. Getting paid millions to be the DH. So sad,” A fan said.

“When you look up the word captain or leader Jason Varitek picture appears,” Someone else added.

“I know the Solution.. Play him at 3B! He’s NOT a DH… if he keeps slumping you’ll know why.. his heart isn’t in it! Because he’s not a DH,” Another fan suggested.

One more fan commented, “we’re all overreacting but this seems like well, an overreaction…it’s been 4 games man why we acting like we lost game 7 he’ll sit tomorrow with Tuesday off & smack XBHs on Wednesday”

Rafael Devers has proven to be one of the best hitters in the game over the course of his career. He’s hit 20-plus home runs in six out of his previous eight seasons with the Red Sox and is a three-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger.
