“He’s a damn good player.” — Steve Kerr on Pat Spencer

Dreaming of the NBA is one thing. Making it there is another. Pat Spencer is living the dream. But starting his journey under the guidance of Steve Kerr and sharing a locker room with Steph Curry? That’s wild! And the twist? A surprising connection to someone in Coach Kerr’s family. You’ll want to hear this.

So, before turning into a full-time basketball player, Pat Spencer played four years of lacrosse with the Loyola Wildcats. But, his life had a different calling and he followed his guts into it. After playing with the Capital City Go-Go, Spencer made a big move. He signed with the Golden State Warriors. But here’s the twist—he joined their G-League team, the Santa Cruz Warriors. On a two-way contract, he bounced between both teams all season.

This is where he met Nick Kerr, GSW head coach Steve Kerr’s 32-year-old son. But what was Kerr Jr. doing in the G League? Wasn’t he the video coordinator for the Dubs? Well, in 2021, Nick joined the Santa Cruz Warriors as their assistant coach. Pat was yet to join the team, and by the time he reached his sophomore year, Steve Kerr’s son was already the head coach.

“Nick has been our coach and I feel like he’s an extension of his dad,” Spencer explained to CNN. “Both of them are, obviously, highly smart individuals in terms of basketball, but also super understanding and want to see the best for each individual.” According to the 28-year-old point guard, Nick Kerr takes after his dad Steve Kerr. So can we say “like father like son?” Well, why not?!

Moreover, Nick Kerr has some experience with coaching duties. So, managing a G League team didn’t feel like a drag to him. Kerr Sr.’s son served as graduate assistant coach for California in the 2016–2017 season. And in 2018, he was an intern for the San Antonio Spurs before moving directly under his dad in the Golden State Warriors.

Now, coming back to Steve Kerr. He effectively dropped his point guard, Pat Spencer on the floor against the OKC Thunder on Wednesday. In an attempt to make a smart and desperate move, the 59-year-old gave his player 15 minutes to shine and he delivered despite the loss.

Steve Kerr got Pat Spencer off the bench vs. the Thunder

Stephen Curry was sidelined against Oklahoma due to his knee injuries. However, players like Pat Spencer were taken off the bench for the game. Steve Kerr needed a win to find the lost rhythm, but SGA’s side was too overpowering for the Dubs’ defense. However, Spencer’s 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists were pretty impressive in the crucial game. He stepped up and contributed from the bench.

Coach made his feelings for Spencer clear by saying: “Greatest lacrosse player of all time.” Well, it’s hard to say how lacrosse is remotely connected to basketball. Nonetheless, the HC complimented his star for his efforts amidst a disappointing game night.

Now, the Warriors have dropped down to third place in the West with 12 wins and 6 defeats in the league so far. Therefore, Coach Kerr needs to step up his strategies and build the team in such a manner that even in Curry’s absence they win. For that, the lacrosse player-turned0NBA hooper Pat Spencer has to step up, depending on when and how the HC gives his floor minutes.

So, will Nick Kerr’s trainee get more chances to shine for the Dubs?
