Young continued to bounce back after being benched earlier this season, with the Panthers suffering a narrow defeat to Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs
In a game that showcased his remarkable resilience, Bryce Young produced his finest performance to date despite his earlier benching this season by the Carolina Panthers. The former number one pick responded in spectacular fashion against Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs.
Although the Panthers narrowly lost by a single score to the defending champions, Young’s statistics were impressive: 21 completions on 35 attempts for 263 yards, achieving a touchdown with zero turnovers. His connection with receivers David Moore, Adam Thielen, and Xavier Legette was particularly noteworthy during the clash.
Yet, even with their robust offensive effort, Mahomes and his Chiefs kept up, finally sealing the win thanks to Spencer Shrader’s decisive field goal. Post-game, Mahomes spoke highly of Young, saying to journalists: “I thought he played his tail off, man. He throws a really good football.”
Furthermore, Mahomes acknowledged Young’s recent positive trajectory, remarking, “I think it’s been cool to see him bounce back these last few weeks and play some great football, because I know he has it because I’ve seen it for a long time. He gave us a scare today, man. He played his tail off. He’s been a great player for a long time and won a lot of football games.”
The earlier doubters of Young, who’d been sidelined as early as week three following the Panthers’ significant investment in him via multiple draft picks, had questioned whether the 2023 draft class from Alabama superstar could deliver in the league given concerns about his height. Yet, his latest showing suggests Young is determined to prove his worth on the field.
After Andy Dalton was sidelined by a minor car crash, Bryce Young stepped back in as the starting quarterback, showing significant improvement over recent weeks and impressively maneuvering in the pocket to create opportunities. His stellar performance last weekend has been acknowledged as his best to date, with Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales in full agreement with Mahomes’ approach.
Canales lauded Young, saying: “Yeah, I mean, I don’t have to make any statements… he’s making it for himself. He’s continued to show us the progress we’re looking for. It’s just all of it. It’s just all the things that he continues to grow, take advantage of opportunities, and lead.
“Another great week of practice in terms of just pushing the guys and really being the voice out there, all the things. So all those things are stuff that I’m proud about, just the way that he’s continuing to grow.”
The Panthers, having turned down several trade offers for Young after previously benching him, appear to view him as their future star, suggesting they won’t be picking another quarterback in the upcoming draft.
