Arsenal continued their impressive start to the Champions League campaign with a 4-0 rout of Atletico Madrid at the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners went into the game on a five-match winning streak, and delivered a superb performance against Diego Simeone’s side.
Viktor Gyokeres bagged the man of the match for his second-half brace, but Gabriel Magalhaes was the standout performer in our view.
The Brazil international opened the scoring from a fabulous Declan Rice freekick. He played a big part for Gyokeres’ second goal with a headed assist.
Aside from his goal contributions, the 27-year-old had a 89 percent passing accuracy. He won 100 percent of his aerial duels with three clearances.
Shortly after the game, Magalhaes took to Instagram to express his delight. Martinelli was one of several Arsenal players to respond, he commented: ‘Complete boss’.
Magalhaes has developed into one of the best central defenders in world football. He has been a good goalscoring threat from set-pieces over the past few years.
The Brazilian has added another quality this campaign. With defenders tracking him from corners, he has produced two fantastic headed assists in the last two games at the front post.
Leandro Trossard capitalised at the back post to score against Fulham on Saturday. Last night, it was Gyokeres who tapped home the Gunners’ fourth goal from Gabriel’s flick.
The Gunners are third in the Champions League standings with nine points. They are only behind Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan on goal difference after three games played.
Arsenal return to Premier League action against Crystal Palace on Sunday. Palace have a Conference League game on Thursday night before their trip to the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners should be well-prepared for the London derby and have the opportunity to extend their three-point lead at the top of the table with a win if other results go their way.
