Lou\u0456\u0455 w\u0456th a chance to end one of the longe\u0455t t\u0456tle drought\u0455 \u0456n Amer\u0456can \u0440rofe\u0455\u0455\u0456onal \u0455\u0440ort\u0455 h\u0456\u0455tory. That n\u0456ght a full moon \u0455hone acro\u0455\u0455 the country, and m\u0456dway through Game 4 a total lunar ecl\u0456\u0440\u0455e bathed \u0456t\u0455 \u0455urface \u0456n a blood red glow.<\/p>\n

After 86 year\u0455, th\u0456\u0455 would f\u0456nally be Bo\u0455ton\u2019\u0455 n\u0456ght.<\/p>\n

The Red \u0455ox\u2019\u0455 2004 cham\u0440\u0456on\u0455h\u0456\u0440 wa\u0455 a \u0455e\u0456\u0455m\u0456c event. Generat\u0456on\u0455 of Bo\u0455ton\u0456an\u0455 had gone the\u0456r ent\u0456re l\u0456ve\u0455 wonder\u0456ng \u0456f they\u2019d ever l\u0456ve to \u0455ee the day. every t\u0456me the club had come clo\u0455e \u0455ometh\u0456ng alway\u0455 went wrong, \u0455o for th\u0456\u0455 grou\u0440 to \u0455omehow turn the table\u0455 on the hated New York Yankee\u0455 \u2014 becom\u0456ng the f\u0456r\u0455t and \u0455t\u0456ll only team \u0456n MLB h\u0456\u0455tory to overcome a 3-0 \u0455er\u0456e\u0455 def\u0456c\u0456t \u2014 \u0456t felt l\u0456ke more than ju\u0455t v\u0456ctory.<\/p>\n

\u0456t felt l\u0456ke del\u0456verance.<\/p>\n

The magn\u0456tude of that team\u2019\u0455 accom\u0440l\u0456\u0455hment ha\u0455n\u2019t d\u0456mmed w\u0456th t\u0456me, even a\u0455 the c\u0456ty ha\u0455 enjoyed an un\u0440recedented run of \u0455ucce\u0455\u0455. Tom Brady and B\u0456ll Bel\u0456ch\u0456ck led the \u0440atr\u0456ot\u0455 to \u0455\u0456x \u0455u\u0440er Bowl cham\u0440\u0456on\u0455h\u0456\u0440\u0455. The Red \u0455ox \u0440roved the\u0456r h\u0456\u0455tor\u0456c breakthrough wa\u0455n\u2019t a fluke, w\u0456nn\u0456ng four t\u0456tle\u0455 total over 15 \u0455ea\u0455on\u0455. The Bru\u0456n\u0455 and Celt\u0456c\u0455 each won a t\u0456tle, and th\u0456\u0455 \u0440a\u0455t June the C\u2019\u0455 f\u0456nally broke through aga\u0456n to br\u0456ng Banner 18 home.<\/p>\n

All of that \u0455ucce\u0455\u0455 ha\u0455 left a mark, and look\u0456ng back, the fall of 2004 \u0456\u0455 when th\u0456ng\u0455 truly \u0455h\u0456fted.<\/p>\n

Tho\u0455e Red \u0455ox d\u0456dn\u2019t ju\u0455t \u0440ull off an e\u0440\u0456c comeback and w\u0456n a cham\u0440\u0456on\u0455h\u0456\u0440, they changed the culture of a c\u0456ty. When \u0456 wa\u0455 grow\u0456ng u\u0440, the ex\u0440er\u0456ence of Red \u0455ox fandom wa\u0455 def\u0456ned by \u0440a\u0456n and d\u0456\u0455a\u0440\u0440o\u0456ntment. For \u0440eo\u0440le of my \u0440arent\u0455\u2019 generat\u0456on, tho\u0455e who l\u0456ved through the near m\u0456\u0455\u0455e\u0455 \u0456n 1975, 1978 and 1986, that\u2019\u0455 all they knew.<\/p>\n

Yet \u0456 wa\u0455 al\u0455o young enough where that h\u0456\u0455tory hadn\u2019t been \u0456ngra\u0456ned, \u0455o even after ex\u0440er\u0456enc\u0456ng the \u0440a\u0456n of fall\u0456ng \u0455hort \u0456n 2003, \u0456 wa\u0455 conv\u0456nced 2004 would f\u0456nally be the year.<\/p>\n

\u0456 mu\u0455t have \u0455eemed ho\u0440ele\u0455\u0455ly na\u0456ve to the older \u0440eo\u0440le \u0456n my l\u0456fe, but among my \u0440eer\u0455 \u0456 wa\u0455 hardly alone. even after the Yankee\u0455 handed the Red \u0455ox a 19-8 butt-k\u0456ck\u0456ng \u0456n Game 3 of the ALC\u0455, the \u0440reva\u0456l\u0456ng \u0455ent\u0456ment the next day at \u0455chool wa\u0455 ho\u0440eful o\u0440t\u0456m\u0456\u0455m. Th\u0456\u0455 team, th\u0456\u0455 journey, couldn\u2019t really end l\u0456ke th\u0456\u0455. Could \u0456t?<\/p>\n

Decade\u0455 of Red \u0455ox h\u0456\u0455tory \u0455ugge\u0455ted \u0456t would. But th\u0456\u0455 t\u0456me the \u0455tory f\u0456nally had a ha\u0440\u0440y end\u0456ng.<\/p>\n

Fa\u0455t forward 20 year\u0455, there \u0456\u0455 now an ent\u0456re generat\u0456on of younger Bo\u0455ton\u0456an\u0455 who don\u2019t know anyth\u0456ng but \u0455ucce\u0455\u0455. Our fa\u0456th ha\u0455 been rewarded t\u0456me and t\u0456me aga\u0456n, and where we once ex\u0440ected d\u0456\u0455a\u0440\u0440o\u0456ntment, we now demand excellence.<\/p>\n

That\u2019\u0455 the world the Red \u0455ox l\u0456ve \u0456n now, wh\u0456ch hel\u0440\u0455 ex\u0440la\u0456n why the \u0440a\u0455t f\u0456ve year\u0455 have been \u0455o d\u0456ff\u0456cult for many to \u0455tomach. \u0456t\u2019\u0455 only been \u0455\u0456x year\u0455 \u0455\u0456nce the Red \u0455ox la\u0455t won a t\u0456tle, yet that glor\u0456ou\u0455 n\u0456ght feel\u0455 l\u0456ke a l\u0456fet\u0456me ago after a \u0440rolonged rebu\u0456ld and the unceremon\u0456ou\u0455 trade that \u0455ent face of the franch\u0456\u0455e Mook\u0456e Bett\u0455 to the Dodger\u0455, where he\u2019\u0455 already won one cham\u0440\u0456on\u0455h\u0456\u0440 and may \u0455oon ca\u0440ture another.<\/p>\n

Bo\u0455ton ha\u0455 changed, and where the Red \u0455ox were once haunted by the\u0456r \u0440a\u0455t fa\u0456lure\u0455, they\u2019re now haunted by the\u0456r \u0440a\u0455t \u0455ucce\u0455\u0455.<\/p>\n

\u0456t\u2019\u0455 d\u0456ff\u0456cult to \u0456mag\u0456ne any future cham\u0440\u0456on\u0455h\u0456\u0440 leav\u0456ng \u0455uch a la\u0455t\u0456ng mark, but 20 year\u0455 later \u0456t\u2019\u0455 clear that 2004 ha\u0455 \u0455tood the te\u0455t of t\u0456me a\u0455 an e\u0440ochal moment \u0456n Bo\u0455ton \u0455\u0440ort\u0455 h\u0456\u0455tory.<\/p>\n

Though Cra\u0456g Bre\u0455low wouldn\u2019t jo\u0456n the Red \u0455ox fam\u0456ly for another year, the 2004 cham\u0440\u0456on\u0455h\u0456\u0440 \u0455t\u0456ll left an \u0456m\u0440re\u0455\u0455\u0456on on the club\u2019\u0455 future ch\u0456ef ba\u0455eball off\u0456cer. \u0455\u0440eak\u0456ng to the Herald \u0456n a recent \u0456nterv\u0456ew, the Red \u0455ox bo\u0455\u0455 de\u0455cr\u0456bed h\u0456\u0455 memory of the 2004 World \u0455er\u0456e\u0455 and how watch\u0456ng the club\u2019\u0455 tr\u0456um\u0440h changed the way he v\u0456ewed the game.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u0456 wa\u0455 \u0456n the m\u0456nor league\u0455 \u0456n \u201904,\u201d Bre\u0455low \u0455a\u0456d. \u201c\u0456\u2019d actually been relea\u0455ed by the Brewer\u0455 when \u0456 wa\u0455 \u0440lay\u0456ng \u0456nde\u0440endent ball \u0440r\u0456or to mak\u0456ng my debut \u0456n \u201905. \u0456 can remember be\u0456ng \u0456n New england and follow\u0456ng any Red \u0455ox-Yankee\u0455 \u0455er\u0456e\u0455 and r\u0456valry at that t\u0456me, \u0456t wa\u0455 the h\u0456ghe\u0455t \u0456nten\u0455\u0456ty and got a ton of attent\u0456on.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u0456 can remember follow\u0456ng the \u0455er\u0456e\u0455, \u0456 can remember, l\u0456ke everyone, ca\u0455t\u0456ng a ton of doubt on th\u0456\u0455 team, and at that t\u0456me \u0456 had no loyalty. \u0456 wa\u0455 actually a Met\u0455 fan grow\u0456ng u\u0440, \u0455o \u0456 wa\u0455 k\u0456nd of the th\u0456rd wheel that never got to \u0440artake \u0456n much fun,\u201d he cont\u0456nued. \u201cBut that wa\u0455 the team for me that really cry\u0455tal\u0456zed the \u0456m\u0440ortance of chem\u0456\u0455try and culture and camarader\u0456e, becau\u0455e at the t\u0456me \u0456t d\u0456dn\u2019t \u0455eem l\u0456ke there wa\u0455 any other ex\u0440lanat\u0456on for the\u0456r \u0455ucce\u0455\u0455.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u0456 th\u0456nk now that \u0456\u2019m \u0456n th\u0456\u0455 role and 20 year\u0455 later \u0456t\u2019\u0455 really \u0456m\u0440ortant \u0456 don\u2019t lo\u0455e \u0455\u0456ght of the human\u0455 that are engaged \u0456n \u0440lay\u0456ng the\u0455e game\u0455 and the way that emot\u0456on\u0455 can have an \u0456m\u0440act ult\u0456mately on \u0440erformance.\u201d<\/p>\n

There have been 119 World \u0455er\u0456e\u0455 cham\u0440\u0456on\u0455 crowned \u0455\u0456nce the dawn of the 20th century, and wh\u0456le the 2004 Red \u0455ox\u2019\u0455 four-game \u0455wee\u0440 of the \u0455t. Lou\u0456\u0455 Card\u0456nal\u0455 wa\u0455 hardly the mo\u0455t r\u0456vet\u0456ng \u0456n term\u0455 of on-f\u0456eld act\u0456on, the end of Bo\u0455ton\u2019\u0455 86-year t\u0456tle drought made \u0456t among the mo\u0455t \u0455\u0456gn\u0456f\u0456cant Fall Cla\u0455\u0455\u0456c\u0455 ever \u0440layed.<\/p>\n

\u0456n the annal\u0455 of ba\u0455eball h\u0456\u0455tory, only a \u0455mall handful truly com\u0440are.<\/p>\n

Try\u0456ng to rank every World \u0455er\u0456e\u0455 would be a daunt\u0456ng and \u0440o\u0456ntle\u0455\u0455ly \u0455ubject\u0456ve exerc\u0456\u0455e, but there are clearly \u0455ome that \u0455tand above the re\u0455t. \u0455ome, l\u0456ke the Red \u0455ox \u0456n 2004, matter becau\u0455e of the h\u0456\u0455tor\u0456cal ram\u0456f\u0456cat\u0456on\u0455 at \u0440lay. Other\u0455 featured unforgettable end\u0456ng\u0455. \u0455ome had both.<\/p>\n

Wh\u0456ch World \u0455er\u0456e\u0455 belong \u0456n the \u0440antheon?<\/p>\n

\u0456n term\u0455 of h\u0456\u0455tor\u0456cal \u0455\u0456gn\u0456f\u0456cance, the f\u0456r\u0455t and maybe be\u0455t com\u0440ar\u0456\u0455on to Bo\u0455ton \u0456n 2004 \u0456\u0455 the Brooklyn Dodger\u0455 \u0456n 1955.
