Since the departure of\u00a0Tyreek Hill<\/a>\u00a0before the 2022 season, they have continued to dominate despite the absence of a clear No. 1 wide receiver \u2014 a testament to the unwavering brilliance of\u00a0quarterback<\/a>\u00a0Patrick Mahomes<\/a>, tight end\u00a0Travis Kelce<\/a>\u00a0and head coach Andy Reid on the sidelines.<\/p>\n

By the end of his rookie season in 2023, Rashee Rice looked poised to become Mahomes\u2019 top wideout. His seven receiving touchdowns led the team, and he tacked on 26 catches for 262 yards and a score during the Chiefs\u2019 postseason march to a Super Bowl LVIII victory.<\/p>\n

Rice\u2019s trajectory was halted in 2024 when he suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 4. Last week, the 25-year-old\u00a0accepted a six-game suspension<\/a>\u00a0for violating the NFL\u2019s personal conduct policy, stemming from a legal case dating back to the 2024 offseason.<\/p>\n

By the time he is eligible to return on Oct. 7 against the\u00a0Las Vegas Raiders<\/a>, Rice will have missed 21 straight Chiefs games, including the playoffs \u2014 but that has not clouded Kelce\u2019s perception of the young receiver as Kansas City heads into a Week 1 showdown with the\u00a0Los Angeles Chargers<\/a>\u00a0in Sao Paulo, Brazil.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s going to attack these weeks and make sure that he\u2019s ready for when he\u2019s allowed back in the building,\u201d Kelce\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0of Rice. \u201cI think it\u2019s going to create that much more love and that much more fight out of him. I think he\u2019s got a lot to prove still in this league.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Chiefs veteran told his brother,\u00a0Jason Kelce<\/a>, on their \u201cNew Heights\u201d podcast that the team \u201chad to prepare\u201d for Rice\u2019s possible suspension in the offseason, including a game plan for Week 1 without him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t wait to get that guy back in the building, but we\u2019re going to have to hold it down without him down in Brazil, man,\u201d Travis Kelce said.<\/p>\n

They adapted without Rice last season and finished the year 15-2 with a trip to the Super Bowl, despite a down year from Kelce. Rookie Xavier Worthy finished as the\u00a0top wide receiver<\/a>\u00a0with 638 yards and six touchdowns.<\/p>\n

Kansas City has plenty of targets for Mahomes, including Kelce, Worthy, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Hollywood Brown.<\/p>\n

The Chiefs also have to play the\u00a0Philadelphia Eagles<\/a>\u00a0(Week 2),\u00a0Baltimore Ravens<\/a>\u00a0(Week 4) and\u00a0Detroit Lions<\/a>\u00a0(Week 6) during the course of Rice\u2019s suspension.
