While the bullpen carousel has slowed since the acquisition of Gregory Soto, Tyler Rogers, and Ryan Helsley at the deadline, the Mets continue to mix and match at the fringes of their roster, designating left-handed reliever Jos\u00e9 Castillo for assignment and recalling right-hander Chris Devenski from Triple-A Syracuse.<\/p>\n

Castillo came over from the Diamondbacks for cash considerations in May and was having a terrible season in Arizona. Over five appearances, he gave up eight earned runs in six and a third innings, good for a 11.37 ERA. But once he came over to the Mets, he settled down and has been an effective lefty out of the bullpen, tossing 15 and a third innings over 16 appearances to a 2.35 ERA.<\/p>\n

Castillo was on the big league roster from May 19 to June 24, when he was first designated for assignment in place of Jonathan Pintaro. He was later re-added at the roster in late July, making one appearance before being DFA\u2019d for Gregory Soto. He was called up when Reed Garrrett went on the Injured List earlier this week. Last night, Castillo tossed two innings, allowing one run on four hits and two strikeouts against the Marlins in his second and final appearance in his third tenure with the club.<\/p>\n

Devenski was signed by the Mets to a minor league deal back in October. He\u2019s made the Syracuse to NYC trip many times this season, having a short stint in April (one appearance), May (one appearance), and July (six appearances). Despite being quite good in that July stint (only one earned run and two walks in six and a third innings), Devenski was elected free agency after being DFA\u2019d for a third time. However, just a couple days later, he signed with the Mets and was back with the big league club for one more appearance before being optioned back to Syracuse.<\/p>\n

While his July stint was his most successful, Devenski is having a perfectly cromulent middle reliever season over limited playing time, putting up a 2.84 ERA\/144 ERA+ over his 12 and two-thirds innings of work.<\/p>\n
