Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach met with a group of local reporters on Thursday morning, covering a variety of topics related to this week\u2019s Chiefs news.<\/p>\n

While it surprised many observers that Kansas City retained eight wide receivers when it reduced its roster to 53 players on Tuesday, those who suspected that it was because the team already knew wideout Rashee Rice was going to miss the season\u2019s first six games were right.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t a surprise,\u201d said Veach, per the Kansas City Star. \u201cIt was communicated to us, and we were certainly made aware a few days prior to cut-down day that this was a better than a 50% shot that this would get resolved before the kickstart of the season.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

Without Rice \u2014 who is clearly the team\u2019s top wideout \u2014 there will be more pressure on other wide receivers to produce during the opening weeks of the season. Veach believes rookie wideout Jalen Royals has a similar skill set, but he\u2019s presently battling tendonitis. Still, Veach thinks there\u2019s another wideout who can pitch in \u2014 and as long as veteran JuJu Smith-Schuster is on the team, Veach isn\u2019t worried.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI think both of those guys have a similar skill set,\u201d said Veach. \u201cObviously JuJu\u2019s been here for a while, and JuJu \u2014 to his credit \u2014 I think he looked better with this camp than he did the last camp he was here. He\u2019s really taking care of his body, so that\u2019s a good thing because we\u2019re getting JuJu fresh and at the beginning of the season.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

Veach also addressed the situation with 34-year-old defensive tackle Mike Pennel \u2014 a fan favorite who was released at final cutdown. There was immediate speculation that Pennel would be brought back after another player had been placed on the Reserve\/Injured list \u2014 a common tactic among GMs working to get their rosters to 53 men \u2014 but Veach said there is more to the story than that.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI think with every position group, we\u2019re trying to get better, and we\u2019re trying to add competition,\u201d he said, per Chiefs Digest. \u201cI think that was one position group we were trying to continually get deeper, get younger, get more athletic.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

Veach said that the team had entered into negotiations with the Cleveland Browns to acquire defensive tackle Jowon Briggs. But the Browns instead accepted the New York Jets\u2019 offer for Briggs \u2014 and then the Chiefs traded with the Jets to re-acquire defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi. That led to Pennel\u2019s release.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI think when it came to Derrick, [it was] probably [a] similar level of play [to] what we\u2019ve seen [from Pennel] \u2014 but both those guys have, over the years, played and helped us out in games,\u201d explained Veach. \u201cBut I do think you take in [the] consideration [of] just the length of the season.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

That ultimately tipped the scales away from Pennel \u2014 who is five years older than Nnadi.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cIf you had to do a slight edge,\u201d noted Veach. \u201c[he] was just, you know, four or five years younger \u2014 and a guy that\u2019s played a lot of reps. But look, I mean, we\u2019re still active at that position.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

Veach is correct. The team has signed defensive tackles Marlon Tuipulotu and Coziah Izzard \u2014 both cut on Tuesday \u2014 to the practice squad, along with former Bears defensive tackle Zacch Pickens. The team is also reported to be on the verge of signing former Detroit Lions\u2019 defensive tackle Brodric Martin. All of them are in addition to second-round rookie Omarr Norman-Lott, who continues to work through an ankle injury he sustained in the second exhibition game against the Seattle Seahawks.<\/p>\n

Would the team consider bringing Pennel back for another stint with the team?<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI think we\u2019d always be open to that for sure,\u201d said Veach. \u201cMike\u2019s a guy that, I mean, he\u2019s a special human being \u2014 and we love Mike. He\u2019s one of those guys that I feel every time we\u2019ve gotten him back in short spurts, it\u2019s been the best he has.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, even at his age, he\u2019s a juice guy [and] he\u2019s an energy guy. We love him, so [we\u2019re] certainly keeping that door open as well. I think all options are open for us at that position.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

For now, however, Pennel is not in the team\u2019s plans.<\/p>\n
