The Los Angeles Lakers are building for the future around Luka Don\u010di\u0107, who signed an extension with the organization over the summer. While there\u2019s speculation that building a true contender around Don\u010di\u0107 could take another year or two,\u00a0he\u2019s made it clear he wants to win now.
\n\u201cDon\u010di\u0107 being just 26 gives the Lakers a far longer timeline to build a championship-contending team, but that doesn’t mean they can slow down and take their time. Don\u010di\u0107 told Lakers president Rob Pelinka and coach JJ Redick in May that he’s not interested in taking the slow approach in building a contender,\u201d CBS Sports\u2019 Jasmyn Wimbish wrote.<\/em><\/p>\n

The main thing Don\u010di\u0107 reportedly wants is a center who can be a consistent lob threat. The Lakers could fulfill that request if they manage to trade Austin Reaves for Dereck Lively and Caleb Martin.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Lakers could cross their fingers and give him that kind of coin, but they could also flip him and a future first for Lively, who has established chemistry with Luka Don\u010di\u0107 and cornerstone potential on defense, and Martin, a reliable role-playing wing with a proven ability to perform on the postseason stage,\u201d\u00a0Bleacher Report\u2019s Zach Buckley wrote.
\nThere\u2019s growing concern that the Lakers won\u2019t be able to afford Reaves once he declines his player option next summer.<\/p>\n

\u201cReaves will be a free agent. There is zero chance he is picking up his $14.9 million player option, even if he plans to stay with the Lakers. Reaves reportedly wants to be paid in the Tyler Herro range of $30 million a year (and Herro is a good comp in a lot of ways),\u201d\u00a0wrote NBC Sports\u2019 Kurt Helin.
\nReaves’ future in Los Angeles seems uncertain, and reports suggest he hasn\u2019t exactly thrived sharing the court with Don\u010di\u0107.<\/p>\n

A trade would reunite Don\u010di\u0107 with Lively, with whom he already has strong chemistry.
