The\u00a0New York Yankees<\/a>\u00a0have an Anthony Volpe problem. The 24-year-old is 12-for-71 in August and made his league-leading 17th error in New York\u2019s blowout loss to the\u00a0Boston Red Sox<\/a>\u00a0on Saturday,<\/p>\n

Volpe is now slashing just .208\/.274\/.400 this season after going 0-for-3 in the defeat. The 5-foot-10-inch, 197-pounder hasn\u2019t had a multi-hit game since August 1 and is hitless since Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Yankees have now lost eight straight games to the Red Sox and are 1.5 games behind them for second place in the AL East and the top AL Wild Card spot. New York has dropped the first three games of its series against Boston after winning its previous five.<\/p>\n

Yankees manager Aaron Boone commented on Volpe after Saturday\u2019s game, via SNY.<\/p>\n

\u201cVolpe made an error, his first one in a few weeks,\u201d he said. \u201cBeen playing really well out there. Bad throw, and then not communicating well enough with a new player on the 3-2 count where Benny\u2019s playing behind him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Volpe\u2019s 17 errors are tied for his career high as a rookie in 2023. However, he committed those errors over 157 games that year against 128 contests this year.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Volpe\u2019s .208 batting average is a career low and .001 points under his rookie average. On the other hand, trade deadline acquisitions Jose Caballero and Amed Rosario are hitting .235 over 100 games and .289 over 54 games, respectively.<\/p>\n

Boone was also asked if he thinks New York is \u201crunning out of time\u201d\u00a0to get on track<\/a>\u00a0against winning teams, via SNY.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, we\u2019re not running out of time, but if we don\u2019t do better, then it\u2019s going to fizzle out and we\u2019re not going to get to where we want to be,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Yankees are 1-8 against the Red Sox and 3-7 against the first-place\u00a0Toronto Blue Jays<\/a>. They have one series left against each of those clubs after Sunday\u2019s bout with Boston, and they\u2019re six games behind Toronto.<\/p>\n

With Oswaldo Cabrera (ankle) on the 60-day IL, New York didn\u2019t have a viable backup shortstop for months besides Oswald Peraza, who mostly plays third. It then dealt the latter player to the\u00a0Los Angeles Angels<\/a>, acquired Caballero from the\u00a0Tampa Bay Rays<\/a>, and Rosario from the\u00a0Washington Nationals<\/a>\u00a0at the trade deadline.<\/p>\n

At this point, it\u2019s hard to justify starting Volpe over the new backups given the Yankees\u2019 place in the standings.<\/p>\n
