The Kansas City Chiefs\u00a0chose to keep a\u00a0shooting\u00a0that occurred at their team facility secret amid a political battle for the location of the team\u2019s new stadium and practice facility.<\/p>\n

Per the\u00a0Kansas City Star, a bullet was\u00a0shot into the office\u00a0of head coach Andy Reid last May.<\/p>\n

Per Jesse Newell of The Athletic, Chiefs President Mark Donovan\u00a0said\u00a0the team chose to keep the shooting a secret while cooperating with local law enforcement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen we went back and said, \u2018OK, here\u2019s where we are. Here\u2019s the situation. Here\u2019s what we\u2019ve determined happened. What\u2019s the next step, both from a PR standpoint (and) from a communication standpoint?\u2019\u201d Donovan said at the team\u2019s annual kickoff luncheon on Thursday. \u201cAnd we made our decisions and moved on.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The decision to keep the shooting private is curious, given the\u00a0mass shooting\u00a0that occurred during the Chiefs\u2019 Super Bowl parade a few months earlier in February. When the homes of Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce were\u00a0burglarized\u00a0in October, the crimes became public knowledge in November.<\/p>\n

The Chiefs\u2019 decision not to publicize the shooting in May doesn\u2019t appear to be a PR plan to keep distractions down for a team that had aspirations of winning a three-peat.<\/p>\n

During the luncheon in downtown Kansas City on Thursday, Donovan was asked if the shooting would have any impact on where the Chiefs plan to build their next stadium. The team is deciding between staying on the Missouri side of Kansas City or moving to Kansas.<\/p>\n

Donovan said it wouldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt really doesn\u2019t,\u201d Donvan said. \u201cI think in any situation, we have to be fully prepared, no matter where you go. It\u2019s something (on which) we will be fully prepared, no matter where we go. So it really doesn\u2019t have an impact.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

One has to wonder if the PR decision had anything to do with the\u00a0political battle\u00a0(called the border war) in Kansas City. Numerous local businesses are dealing with an\u00a0increase in crime\u00a0in the area (the city had a\u00a0record 182 killings in 2023).<\/p>\n

It certainly doesn\u2019t bode well for Missouri that a shooting happened at the facility months after the incident in Union Station in February.<\/p>\n
