KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – For the fourth year in a row, the Chiefs have a new backup quarterback. His name is Gardner Minshew, and he has started nearly 50 games in the NFL. Minshew says he\u2019s excited for his opportunity in Kansas City.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love the way they teach [the offense] here,\u201d Minshew told reporters at training camp. \u201cThey communicate very well on potential looks you can get, how the play might adjust on the fly, and really give the guys the opportunity to go play ball and be successful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Minshew \u2013 who started nine games for the Raiders last year \u2013 is grateful to be part of a franchise that has stood the test of time.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve been running these plays for so long,\u201d said Minshew. \u201cThey\u2019ve developed such an understanding of what works against certain looks, when they need to get out of things, so that has helped my learning.\u201d<\/p>\n

Minshew was 6\/9 for 54 yards and added a rushing touchdown in his preseason debut with the Chiefs. The 29-year-old former sixth-round pick is focused on getting better each day.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love getting the work. That\u2019s the only way you get better in this league is to get in there and run reps,\u201d Minshew said. \u201cI\u2019ve been fortunate this camp to get as many as I have.\u201d<\/p>\n

Minshew is known to have a \u201cgunslinger\u201d mentality. Head Coach Andy Reid doesn\u2019t want his backup to lose it.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis big thing for me has been to just be aggressive, take shots, and take chances,\u201d said Minshew. \u201cThis practice is time to learn, figure out your limits, and learn what you can do.\u201d<\/p>\n
