Marc Maron\u00a0said getting the rights to\u00a0Taylor Swift\u2019s music doesn\u2019t come without a hefty price tag.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The comedian and podcaster, 61, spent major dollars in order to use a specific song from the pop star\u2019s catalog for his upcoming stand-up special, he revealed on the July 25 episode of Vulture\u2019s\u00a0Good One<\/em>\u00a0podcast.<\/p>\n

Licensing Swift\u2019s song \u201cBigger Than the Whole Sky\u201d \u2014 a bonus track on the\u00a03am Edition<\/em>\u00a0of her 2022 album\u00a0Midnights<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 cost about \u201c$50,000,\u201d Maron said.<\/p>\n

He added that he felt he needed the specific track for a pivotal moment in his HBO special,\u00a0Marc Maron: Panicked<\/em>,\u00a0so he reached out to a mutual friend,\u00a0Jack Antonoff, for help.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know Jack Antonoff enough to text him \u2014 and he\u2019s the co-writer on that song,\u201d Maron explained. \u201cI said, \u2018I don\u2019t know what\u2019s proper or how to do this, but we\u2019re running out of money on this thing. It\u2019s probably going to come out of my pocket. Is there anything you can do about this song or talk to Taylor?\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n

Maron said Antonoff, 41, advised him to go through official music licensing channels, and\u00a0he was ultimately able to get approval to use the track.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was doable,\u201d Maron said, adding, however, that the tens of thousands of dollars only covered the use of one minute of the song.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would have gone over the minute, [but] it would have been more money,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

Maron said he doesn\u2019t know if Swift, 35, has heard the specific joke in the special that her team signed off on, but he was \u201cmanifesting\u201d that she would indeed like it if she did \u2014 for the sake of his project.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt had to happen,\u201d Maron said. \u201cThe real fear [was], like, [if] she doesn\u2019t let you use it, and then what do you do? You can\u2019t do the bit on the special.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Maron didn\u2019t reveal the content of the bit in question, he has spoken about Swift\u2019s music \u2014 and his\u00a0journey to becoming a Swiftie\u00a0\u2014 in the past.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m an open-minded guy, and I like music. I [wanted] to try to figure out what it is about Taylor Swift that everyone never shuts up about,\u201d he said on a May 2023 episode of his long-running podcast,\u00a0WTF with Marc Maron.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Maron said he ended up listening to Swift\u2019s\u00a0Midnights\u00a0<\/em>album\u00a0on a hike, and he was impressed with what her heard.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018Alright. I get it.\u2019 It\u2019s pop music, but it\u2019s not dance music [and] it\u2019s, sort of, emotional. There\u2019s a lot of longing and sadness and isolation and processing these overwhelming feelings of melancholy,\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n

When previously discussing the new special, the comedian said, per\u00a0Deadline, that he felt like \u201cthis is the best work\u201d he\u2019s ever done, adding, \u201cEverything came together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maron\u2019s latest creative endeavor comes two years after his last HBO special, the critically acclaimed\u00a0From Bleak to Dark<\/em>, which explored grief and the experience of losing his partner, filmmaker\u00a0Lynn Shelton, during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n
