(AP Photo\/Lynne Sladky)AP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p id=\"3GGSQB6BQ5H2FFAWEILPYI5EBU\"><b>NEW YORK \u2014<\/b> Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns revealed that the team will be \u201cactive\u201d in the trade market for a relief pitcher on Monday.<\/p>\n<p id=\"K76TMEFGYVELRK4Y3B3ADYBDMA\">If they can\u2019t pull off a deal for bullpen arms, then they\u2019ll \u201cbegin to think\u201d about promoting some of their top prospects from within, namely starters Brandon Sproat and Nolan McLean.<\/p>\n<p id=\"KOAPEMERUJAFTNICP2KCF3R6AU\">\u201cI think for any prospect, it\u2019s a combination of where they are in their developmental progression and where the team need is,\u201d Stearns said. \u201cBoth those guys, I think, over the last three weeks, have taken meaningful steps forward in their development, and I\u2019m excited to see where it goes from there.<\/p>\n<p id=\"HEQEG7LXTZAAJKBAUE2KBQYTQY\">\u201cIf there is a need, I think either of those guys could be ready over the next couple months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"OQ6HRXL3D5G6FNR46HGMLZ7I4U\">After a rough start to the season in Triple-A, Sproat has taken a massive step forward in his progression. He hasn\u2019t allowed a run in his last four starts, striking out 27 batters in 23 innings.<\/p>\n<p id=\"JEQFXUBF3NFWVE3ONK4OJES5C4\">This season, Sproat has a 4.34 ERA, down from 5.95 on June 22, with 70 strikeouts over 85 innings in 19 starts.<\/p>\n<p id=\"C7B7WAO4EBH67C65JFAFDHJ62Q\">Promoted to Triple-A on May 6, McLean has been near-perfect in the minor league\u2019s highest level.<\/p>\n<p id=\"LVG5VWLHP5AJRNA2ZSDHCBPKEY\">Take away his last start, where he allowed six runs (five earned) in 3 2\/3 innings, and McLean has a 2.52 ERA (17 ER in 60 2\/3 innings) with 65 strikeouts.<\/p>\n<p id=\"TUZCWYWTTFAQ7LIGIQVRLQ7NNY\">The \u201cchallenge\u201d with going this route, Stearns warns, is that it\u2019s difficult to stretch a pitcher back out once he\u2019s been shortened.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ZHHHZV2MB5HS7DLOJDGFLEFA3I\">\u201cWe can certainly reverse ourselves over the off season,\u201d Stearns said, \u201cbut once we shorten someone up to give them a chance to be a member of our pen, really tough to build them back up if you need them as a starter.\u201d<\/p>\n<section data-gaid=\":Rdraq6:\"><\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mets&#8217; top two pitching prospects could help team down the stretch<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":6,"featured_media":82051,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-82050","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-mlb"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.7 -
