(AP Photo\/Adam Hunger)AP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p id=\"RLD34EQDWRCSPIF6ECCH2A3UUA\">Yankees announcer Michael Kay took issue with a comment Juan Soto made this week after the new Mets outfielder was left off the All-Star Game roster.<\/p>\n<p id=\"KFHNPFJMLVE3PEV7AKIE3SHIA4\">Speaking to reporters after the news broke, Soto said, \u201cIt happens,\u201d and it\u2019s \u201ca part of baseball.\u201d He was then asked a follow-up question about whether he wanted to play in the game.<\/p>\n<p id=\"DXPMLT5YCJFLPCQLVUKD52F4LE\">\u201cWhat do you think? I think it\u2019s a lot of money on the table,\u201d Soto said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ILVJKBC4URH2RMPQJODCP2LXXU\">Kay made it clear on \u201cThe Michael Kay Show\u201d on Wednesday that he wasn\u2019t a fan of that comment.<\/p>\n<p id=\"OWZQCUZFXJAPBDSIH7BUAOTU6Q\">\u201cOh, goodness gracious. Talk about being tone deaf,\u201d Kay said. \u201cC\u2019mon, Juan. &#8230; You\u2019re making a smidge under $47 million this season. And you\u2019re upset you\u2019re not making the All-Star Game because of an All-Star bonus that you have in your contract? Do you know how bad that looks that you said that? &#8230; Do you even realize how that makes you look?\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"RNMCXVFYNRFR3P6ZPHYQGGO4GI\">On top of players splitting a prize pool \u2014 in 2024, it was $640,000 split among 32 players on the winning team ($20,000 each) \u2014 Soto would have been owed $100,000, according to a bonus clause in his contract.<\/p>\n<p id=\"IAXBAP4ESRGKPEAUAR3EANRDIE\">That\u2019s a potential $120,000 squandered. Peanuts compared to the average annual value on his 15-year, $765 million contract ($51 million), but a lot of money nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p id=\"I3F3HSETXFH4LIHZGUGKEZHBJQ\">Soto has made the All-Star game four times in seven seasons (not including the COVID-shortened 2020 season).
