(AP Photo\/Adam Hunger)AP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p id=\"37FQFW6SJBGIJP74HQACPQQ5V4\"><b>NEW YORK \u2014 <\/b>Mets outfielder Starling Marte\u2019s bad knee \u201cflared up\u201d in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Yankees, manager Carlos Mendoza revealed on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p id=\"OF33GFYY6BCKHDNR6IPLU7DC7I\">On the fourth pitch of an at-bat against Yankees closer Devin Williams, a high changeup, Marte motioned as if about to swing, but promptly stopped. For a brief second, he seemed to buckle on his left knee and could be seen grimacing.<\/p>\n<p id=\"I4FCTWLCX5CLTCU2CF6MPHBMPY\">Stepping off, he bent forward, massaging his knee, and was quickly joined by the team\u2019s trainers. Eventually, he completed his at-bat, grounding out to third base<\/p>\n<p id=\"WUEG6CZYOZCEZIJXQYIABYXMBU\">\u201cThat same knee that he had issues with last year (and) spring training,\u201d Mendoza said after the Mets\u2019 6-4 loss. \u201cThey\u2019re taking a look at him right now and we\u2019ll see what we\u2019re dealing with here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"IFPIZ2X4KJERTESQZHDQQMMN54\">Marte has been dealing with what the Mets called a \u201cbone bruise issue\u201d back in spring training. At the time, Stearns gave some insight into a conversation he had with Marte regarding playing through pain.<\/p>\n<p id=\"XBFXKSUPDJC6NNE5BFT7SIWGPI\">\u201cHe told me, early in camp, \u2018I\u2019ve played through pain my entire career. I\u2019m used to it. I\u2019ll keep doing it,\u2018\u201dStearns told reporters in March.<\/p>\n<p id=\"KKK4I7RDAJBSBES7U6FE3WT3FE\">How serious do the Mets believe Marte\u2019s injury is?<\/p>\n<p id=\"MR7WYYS2PBEQHITTD2E4PFPCME\">\u201cI\u2019ve got to wait,\u201d Mendoza said. \u201cI was just talking to him, and he was like, \u2018Obviously, I felt it.\u2019 But, I\u2019ve got to wait and see what the doctor says.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"RWSWMDPFQJHGJKAZ5G3GKWOXTM\">Marte has played an important role for the Mets this season.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2HU5UHEATNBEDJEHTOTYAZSBGU\">Initially, he was expected to lose playing time after the Mets signed Juan Soto. But he embraced the role, seeing it as an opportunity that makes him \u201cstronger\u201d because it allows him to help his teammates in a different way.<\/p>\n<p id=\"45TA3JQFZBGORMC2FNFUT4DDNQ\">Since outfielder Jesse Winker landed on the injured list with an oblique strain in early May, Marte\u2019s returned to an everyday player and is thriving.<\/p>\n<p id=\"47C6P5HHUVGFRPJYBQHGPRXKUQ\">He\u2019s 22-for-63, a .349 batting average in his last 17 games, including a three-hit effort against the Yankees on Sunday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Doctors are evaluating Mets veteran for potential injury<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":6,"featured_media":77285,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-77277","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-mlb"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.7 -
