With Brooklyn as the only team that can offer a starting salary of $20 million or more (Golden State would have the right to match), the best option could be both sides exploring a sign-and-trade,\u201d Marks wrote. \u201cThe decision with Kuminga plays a role in what flexibility Golden State has in finding a starting center.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Bleacher Report\u2019s Dan Favale wrote Sunday that an obscure NBA guideline is going to make a sign-and-trade exceedingly difficult, which probably means Kuminga ends up playing his fifth year in the league \u2014 and potentially several seasons beyond \u2014 in a Warriors uniform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBase-year-compensation gymnastics complicate any sign-and-trade possibilities unless the [Nets] are involved. Kuminga will essentially count as only 50 percent of his new salary to the Warriors, yet his next team has to math out deals to account for the full weight of his new price point,\u201d Favale wrote. \u201cRe-signing him to preserve the asset and salary slot and figuring out the rest later is Golden State\u2019s best bet. This approach gets risky if Kuminga fields a ridiculous offer sheet with an average annual value that could age poorly, but Brooklyn is the lone potential suitor who has the spending power to inflict that kind of discomfort.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"id\/article\/slide\/5217907\/element\/3\">\n<h2>Warriors Can Match Any Offer to Jonathan Kuminga, Revisit a Trade Ahead of NBA\u2019s February Deadline<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_5397451\">\n<div>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GettyImages-2191416804-e1750657341254.jpg?quality=65&amp;strip=all&amp;w=782\" alt=\"Warriors Predicted to Reunite With Versatile $25 Million Wing in Free Agency\" width=\"782\" height=\"438\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5397451\" data-lazy-load=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-5397451\">GettyJonathan Kuminga of the Golden State Warriors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>That isn\u2019t the ideal outcome for Golden State, as head coach Steve Kerr benched Kuminga down the stretch of the regular season and played him sparingly in Round 1 of the playoffs against the Houston Rockets.<\/p>\n<p>An injury to Stephen Curry in Game 1 of Round 2 against the Minnesota Timberwolves forced Kerr\u2019s hand, and Kuminga responded to the challenge by averaging nearly 21 points per game, despite just a seven-point performance over just 13 minutes played in the opening contest.<\/p>\n<p>Still, none of that changes the reality that Kuminga\u2019s most effective style of play doesn\u2019t fit seamlessly with how Kerr wants the offense to run. Golden State drafted him No. 7 overall in 2021 and paid him $25 million over the life of his four-year rookie contract.<\/p>\n<p>Tim Kawakami spoke with Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy for a piece that ran on June 27 in The San Francisco Standard, and Kuminga was a central topic of conversation.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a guy who believes in himself, wants to see what he can do. I think ultimately if we\u2019re able to bring him back, we see a path for him to be able to do some of those things here,\u201d Dunleavy said of Kuminga. \u201cI think for him, experiencing free agency, kind of being on the market, for him to go through that, I think there\u2019s an appeal to it.
