The expectation is he will seek a deal worth roughly $30 million annually. That is where things could get tricky for the Bulls.<\/p>\n<p>ESPN\u2019s Zach Kram listed an extension for Giddey as the \u201cone move\u201d\u00a0 the Bulls \u201cshould make.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne move they should make: Extend restricted free agent guard Josh Giddey, who averaged nearly a triple-double from mid-February on. But Chicago \u2026 shouldn\u2019t go overboard with its offer to Giddey, who still has obvious limitations in a playoff setting and likely won\u2019t have many outside suitors,\u201d Kram wrote on June 29. \u201cIf the Bulls\u2019 offer climbs into, say, Immanuel Quickley\u2019s range (five years, $175 million), they\u2019ve made a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"869b3a6263a87f65f6f0d6bcdd23d1ce\">\n<div>\n<article>\n<div>\n<p>Josh Giddey\u2019s triple-double boosts the Bulls to No. 9 in the East!<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udd25 28 PTS<br \/>\n\ud83d\udd25 16 REB<br \/>\n\ud83d\udd25 11 AST<br \/>\n\ud83d\udd25 3 BLK<br \/>\n\ud83d\udd25 2 STL<br \/>\n\ud83d\udd25 57.9 FG%<\/p>\n<p>The @chicagobulls are now JUST 0.5 GB of No. 8 ATL.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Giddey, who turns 23 in October, was the No. 6 overall pick of the 2021 draft. That gives him four years of experience. Because of that, he is eligible for a max contract worth 25% of the salary cap in the year that it begins.<\/p>\n<p>That would mean a deal starting at $38.6 million for Giddey in 2025-26. There are no other readily available threats to lure Giddey away from the Bulls in free agency this offseason. Spotrac\u2019s Keith Smith argued that a $25 million AAV should be enough for both sides.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to factor in where the cap growth has gone. So, I think if it gets much north of $25 [million, maybe $28 million, you have to start thinking, \u2018All right, we\u2019re going the other way.\u2019 Here\u2019s the challenge: Who\u2019s giving him that kind of offer? I don\u2019t know that there\u2019s a team out there that\u2019s going to give it to him,\u201d Smith told Laurence Holmes and Matt Spiegel on \u201cSpiegel &amp; Holmes\u201d on June 27.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s where I think that the Bulls, it kind of works a little bit more in their favor. Maybe more towards the $25 million range for a guy like Josh Giddey, than getting up into the $28 [million], $30 million. Because I just don\u2019t think the Nets are parachuting in with an offer like that. Nor do I think a team\u2019s coming in with anything like that through sign-and-trade.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"1e23548d8ec26ec761a7399db47d4917\">\n<div>\n<article>\n<div>\n<p>@SBN_Ricky comments on Josh Giddey\u2019s impact and the contract he believes the Chicago Bulls should give him:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I\u2019m Arturas [Karnisovas], that\u2019s where I\u2019m drawing the line. 4 years $80 million dollars\u201d\ud83c\udfc0<\/p>\n<p>Would you be happy if the Bulls signed Josh Giddey to this contract?\ud83d\udc40<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>There is also the matter of whether the Bulls should even extend Giddey on the lower end this offseason. But Smith argued that such a deal would be just fine, given the rising salary cap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s okay because they don\u2019t have a lot of long-term salary locked up on their books. And the important thing to note is a salary that\u2019s less than $30 million sounds crazy, right? Because that was close to a max deal. The lowest in max deal next season is $38.6 million,\u201d Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re under $30 million, you\u2019re talking about 20% of the cap or so, and then it won\u2019t grow as much as the cap will grow over the next couple years. You can pitch the idea of, \u2018Hey, just don\u2019t do that. Let\u2019s go into next summer with a whole crap-ton of cap space because they would only have a couple deals on the book, so they could really be in a good spot to go after people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith argued that his last point is antithetical to how the Bulls have operated in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the bottom line is that the Bulls should work to retain Giddey. That is, so long as they do not get caught bidding against themselves in an overpay.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Bulls\u2019 Track Record Very Informative<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_5365804\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GettyImages-2207869123-1-e1747971683624.jpg?quality=65&amp;strip=all&amp;w=780\" alt=\"Bulls Warned Over Potentially Costly \u2018Mistake\u2019 With Josh Giddey\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5365804\" data-lazy-load=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-5365804\">GettyChicago Bulls executive vice president of basketball operations Art\u016bras Karni\u0161ovas looks on before a game against the Los Angeles Lakers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Bulls have the flexibility to retain Giddey and add to their roster this offseason, if they so choose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChicago Bulls have a ton of flexibility to increase their payroll,\u201d NBA cap analyst Yossi Gozlan posted on X on June 28. \u201cThey have enough luxury tax room to re-sign Josh Giddey and use their $17.2 million trade exception or $14.1 million non-tax mid-level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst apron hard cap.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"d3c436c9b92f0e331dabebbf79c87cb1\">\n<div>\n<article>\n<div>\n<p>Is Josh Giddey easing concerns about his new contract with his recent high level performances?<\/p>\n<p>@Will_Gottlieb weighs in:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>However, Kram pointed to their recent history with the likes of Nikola Vucevic, Zach LaVine, and, more recently, Patrick Williams.<\/p>\n<p>All three players signed lucrative deals with the Bulls, only for the team to turn around and have difficulty trading them.
