One of the areas of worry for the Kansas City Chiefs, as they head into training camp, is in the back field. While the concern might not jump out to the average fan, there’s legitimate reason to worry.<\/p>\n
If the Chiefs wanted to get ahead of the curve as free agent options have dwindled, there is one more who makes a lot of sense: former Los Angeles Chargers fourth-round pick Joshua Kelley.<\/p>\n
The more tantalizing options like Nick Chubb and JK Dobbins have been taken off the market recently, but Kelley is still available and would be the perfect dart throw for Kansas City. Isiah Pacheco is, of course, the starter. Kareem Hunt is the backup, for now.<\/p>\n
But, the further down the depth chart you go, the bigger the question marks get.<\/p>\n
The Chiefs have Elijah Mitchell behind Hunt, but the former San Francisco 49ers running back hasn’t been relevant in a couple of years. Injuries have plagued Mitchell and it certainly looks like his best days are far behind him.<\/p>\n
Kansas City also has seventh-round rookie Brashard Smith who is, well, a seventh-round rookie. That’s not to say he couldn’t make an impact in Year 1, because he very well could. But, the odds aren’t exactly in his favor.<\/p>\n
What happens if Pacheco’s health becomes a concern again? Hunt looks just about done in the NFL, although he might still have the backup job based on experience and name alone.<\/p>\n
Fans have been concerned about running back depth and will continue to be until training camp or preseason proves otherwise, but adding the former UCLA standout could give Kansas City some strong competition.<\/p>\n
Kelley has shown an ability to catch the football as well, and he’s a patient runner who never really took off in Los Angeles. He did spend last year with the Tennessee Titans but only appeared in three games.<\/p>\n
In a free agent market that’s all but completely dried up, Kelley looks like as good of an option as the Chiefs are going to find.<\/p>\n Before the Chiefs enter training camp, they could boost one position with a former Chargers draft pick.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":6,"featured_media":70659,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-70656","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nfl"],"yoast_head":"\n
