\u201cI love it, man,\u201d he declared. \u201c[I\u2019m] so happy to be a part of this \u2014 [and] super grateful for Coach Reid bringing me in and giving me an opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n
Minshew, who has 46 starts for four different teams over a six-year NFL career, acknowledged the challenge of learning Reid\u2019s complex offense.<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel like there\u2019s so much to learn,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m looking for any way to help this team, help this organization and be a part of something special.\u201d<\/p>\n
Still, he believes the offense suits him well \u2014 particularly in what it gives the players.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a lot of giving the tools to the players to be successful \u2014 letting guys kind of do what they think is right out there,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot of fun playing that way \u2014 and having guys around you who know how to play that way.\u201d<\/p>\n
This pairing has been a long time coming. Before the Jacksonville Jaguars selected him in the sixth round (178th overall) back in 2019, Minshew met with the Chiefs.<\/p>\n
\u201cI remember visiting here,\u201d he recalled of the experience, \u201cand how good I felt leaving here \u2014 with Coach Reid and the staff in place and the offense and everything they were doing. So I think it\u2019s been on my radar for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n
But while playing as a backup under Reid could give Minshew\u2019s career a boost, he\u2019s not focused on anything beyond this season.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you\u2019re learning,\u201d he explained, \u201c[and] you feel like you\u2019re getting better \u2014 moving closer to the person you want to be [and] the player you want to be \u2014 then that\u2019s a successful year.\u201d<\/p>\n
The most important part of a backup quarterback\u2019s job is having a good relationship with the starter. For Minshew, working with Mahomes has already been enlightening.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s easy to see all the highlight plays [and] the big throws,\u201d he noted. \u201cYou see that every day on the practice field. But what I really wanted [was] to come here and see is how [Mahomes] prepares \u2014 not just in the building, [but] how he gets his body right [and] how he trains. I think he does everything at the elite, highest level. There\u2019s just so much to take from that.\u201d<\/p>\n
We\u2019re all hoping that Minshew only takes the field in the preseason \u2014 or during a 50-point blowout of his most recent former team: the Las Vegas Raiders. But if his number is called, there will be comfort in knowing the team will be in steady hands.<\/p>\n
