<\/picture> <\/span> Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images<\/cite><\/figure>\n\u201cYou\u2019ve got to make sure you have guys that are that are good at it,\u201d he explained. \u201cThe speed is always something that you\u2019re looking for. That dynamic guy that can feel it with speed. Brashard brings that to the table. I like him back there. Royals? He\u2019s got talent. Then Nohl? He\u2019s done it, too, in college. So we\u2019ve got a lot of young guys to work with.\u201d<\/p>\n
Toub also explained his philosophy on kickoff returns. Last season, he frequently had a running back \u2014 either Samaje Perine or Carson Steele \u2014 line up as a second return man opposite speedier wide receivers like Mecole Hardman and Nikko Remigio.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can have one guy that could be a blocker,\u201d said Toub, \u201cbut the other guy\u2019s got to be more of a speed guy. The other guy that doesn\u2019t field the ball, he\u2019s got to be a real good in-space blocker, because he\u2019s got to go one-on-one. He\u2019s not allowed to go double-team with anybody, so he\u2019s got to be able to block a guy by himself. So [it\u2019s] going to be really important that they\u2019re really good blockers. Those guys are important.\u201d<\/p>\n Toub also thinks Remigio is now the favorite to become the main punt returner \u2014 but will still have some competition for the job.<\/p>\n \u201cHe just continues to get better,\u201d the coach observed. \u201cHe\u2019s going to be a hard guy to beat out. He doesn\u2019t have that dynamic Brashard Smith top-end speed, but he brings so [many] other things to the table as far as his ball reads, his catching on the run, his instincts [about] how close somebody is to him \u2014 where you can time it up and beat him with just his catching ability alone. So he just keeps getting better.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s going to be a great battle at that punt return spot. [But] Brashard is a guy that\u2019s going to be in the mix. [Xavier] Worthy will [also] be in the mix.\u201d<\/p>\n Chiefs fans may wince upon hearing that Worthy \u2014 who had amazing offensive performances in the second half of his rookie season \u2014 might be exposed to injury on punt returns. Toub reminded his listeners that this duty was part of the plan for Worthy\u2019s 2024 season.<\/p>\n \u201cHe planned on being our guy until Rashee Rice got hurt,\u201d said Toub, \u201cand that changed everything for that dynamic. He ended up being the No. 1 [wide receiver] for us last year, so we couldn\u2019t afford to have him back there.<\/p>\n \u201c[But] now I say he\u2019s the [league\u2019s] best punt returner nobody knows about. That\u2019s Worthy.
