The Kansas City Chiefs have had fairly strong attendance at OTAs despite a few players like wide receiver Rashee Rice missing time with an illness.<\/p>\n
Rice is now back at practice as of June 3, as is fellow wide receiver Hollywood Brown, but one key Chiefs starter has been missing amid long-term contract negotiations. And that player is franchise-tagged right guard Trey Smith.<\/p>\n
\u201cDuring the first week of OTAs, Chiefs starting RG Trey Smith was among the players absent from the first three practices,\u201d A-to-Z Sports Kansas City\u2019s Charles Goldman reported on June 3.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cHe still hasn\u2019t attended OTAs to participate in practice, which shouldn\u2019t be a huge shock to fans,\u201d Goldman continued. Explaining: \u201cFirstly, these are voluntary workouts. Smith is staying away while seeking a long-term contract extension on the franchise tag. That\u2019s the smart move for Smith and the franchise, not to risk injury during this juncture of the offseason. It protects both parties from potential financial problems should an injury occur.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Goldman stressed that \u201cthis isn\u2019t indicative of some contract-related tensions, but rather just the seasonality of the\u00a0NFL.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cSmith will take advantage of some time off, knowing he won\u2019t be fined,\u201d the reporter went on. \u201cHe also knows there is a ticking timer for his side and the Chiefs to agree on a long-term deal. As a franchise-tagged player, the two sides have until July 15 at 4:00 p.m. ET to agree to a long-term contract extension. If Smith does not agree to a long-term deal by this date, he will play out the season under the franchise tag on a fully guaranteed $23.4M one-year contract.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n As Goldman noted, there isn\u2019t much cause for concern in the case of Smith. Veteran offensive linemen don\u2019t generally do too much at OTAs, being that it\u2019s mostly a passing camp without pads.<\/p>\n For a blocker with the experience of Smith, it\u2019s even less important that he takes part in this early offseason program, because he\u2019s done it all before.<\/p>\n Both Smith and the Chiefs have also\u00a0made it clear that they want to work something out\u00a0long-term.<\/p>\n \u201cUltimately, I can only focus on working out and training,\u201d\u00a0Smith told NFL host and reporter Kay Adams\u00a0on the \u201cUp & Adams\u201d show on March 24.<\/p>\n \u201cI love Kansas City, it\u2019s my home,\u201d he continued. \u201cI love the Chiefs. The fans in Kansas City are some of the best people I\u2019ve ever been around.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Smith concluded the response by telling Adams that \u201cI would love to stay [with the Chiefs],\u201d and that signing an extension is still his \u201cplan.\u201d<\/p>\n Similarly, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach has said multiple times that finalizing a long-term extension with Smith is a priority for Kansas City this offseason.<\/p>\n Itching for more Chiefs OTAs content? The next media-friendly practice is tomorrow,\u00a0on Wednesday, June 4.<\/p>\n Some of the early standouts from the first week of Chiefs OTAs\u00a0have been wide receivers Tyquan Thornton,\u00a0Xavier Worthy\u00a0and rookie\u00a0Jalen Royals.<\/p>\n All-Pro defensive back\u00a0Trent McDuffie\u00a0also got the best of\u00a0Patrick Mahomes\u00a0once already this spring, intercepting the two-time NFL MVP.<\/p>\n And the\u00a0backup quarterback battle has begun to take a very clear shape\u00a0already.
