He started the season with a crisp 2.47 ERA through his first nine starts, keeping hitters off balance with a reworked pitch mix and a sort of quiet confidence. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Battered by early injuries <span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to their rotation, the Mets leaned on Canning more than expected, and he delivered \u2026 for a while. But for every story in baseball history of a player who rose out of nowhere, there are countless others about regression to the mean, and Canning could be showing a few cracks.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Griffin Canning Has Command, Velocity Issues in Recent Starts<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Over his last two starts, Canning has pitched a combined 5.2 innings, allowing eight runs, six of them earned, on five hits and eight walks, four in each game. His command was off, his velocity was down, and the pitch sequencing that had baffled hitters earlier in the season wasn\u2019t fooling anybody.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI think he was off, especially with his secondary pitches,\u201d Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said after <\/span>Canning\u2019s most recent start <span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a 9-4 loss to the White Sox on Wednesday. \u201cYou know, the slider out of the zone (and) the change-up.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI just thought they took some really good at bats. They didn\u2019t chase. But overall, I just thought that, especially with the secondaries, he was out of the strike zone.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What makes Canning\u2019s stumble more complicated is what\u2019s coming next. While the Mets <\/span>patchwork rotation has made history <span data-contrast=\"auto\"> so far this season, several of the projected starters for 2025 are close to returning from injury, which could lead to some uncomfortable conversations about innings.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Return of Several Injured Players Could Push Griffin Canning Out of Rotation<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to <\/span>recent reports <span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Frankie Montas is on a rehab assignment and expected back soon, Paul Blackburn is reportedly \u201cclose,\u201d and even Sean Manaea, who\u2019s battled shoulder fatigue, is progressing steadily.
