Bruce Springsteen\u00a0has waded into the Ticketmaster dynamic pricing row amid the site\u2019s fall from grace over the\u00a0Taylor Swift\u00a0tour fiasco.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The iconic rocker, 73, was slammed in July after tickets for his 2023 Springsteen and the E Street Band tour rose to almost $5000 for a floor seat on Ticketmaster \u2013 with the singer telling\u00a0Rolling Stone\u00a0ticket buying is \u2018confusing\u2019 but \u2018most of my tickets are affordable.\u2019<\/p>\n

Dynamic pricing allows ticket costs to increase and decrease based on the current market demand.<\/p>\n

Ticketmaster is currently under fire following their botched handling of the Taylor Swift\u00a0The Eras tour, which saw the site crash repeatedly \u2013 with Ticketmaster blaming \u2018bot attacks\u2019 for the disaster.<\/p>\n

He said: \u2018What I do is a very simple thing. I tell my guys, \u201cGo out and see what everybody else is doing. Let\u2019s charge a little less.\u201d That\u2019s generally the directions. They go out and set it up. For the past 49 years or however long we\u2019ve been playing, we\u2019ve pretty much been out there under market value. I\u2019ve enjoyed that. It\u2019s been great for the fans.<\/p>\n

\u2018This time I told them, \u201cHey, we\u2019re 73 years old. The guys are there. I want to do what everybody else is doing, my peers.\u201d So that\u2019s what happened. That\u2019s what they did.\u2019<\/p>\n

But ticket buying has gotten very confusing, not just for the fans, but for the artists also. And the bottom line is that most of our tickets are totally affordable. They\u2019re in that affordable range.<\/p>\n

He added that tickets that are going to go for \u2018a higher value somewhere anyway\u2019 would ordinarily see the ticket broker take the money, so he wanted \u2018the guys who\u00a0\u00a0are going to be up there sweating three hours a night for it\u2019 to have the cash.<\/p>\n

This comes as\u00a0Taylor Swift<\/span>\u00a0blasted Ticketmaster for the mayhem surrounding her recent ticket sale, claiming that she was \u2018assured\u2019 the company could handle the high demand \u2018multiple times\u2019 and calling it \u2018excruciating\u2019 to \u2018watch mistakes happen with no recourse.\u2019<\/p>\n

Ticketmaster has cancelled the scheduled public sale of tickets for Taylor Swift\u2019s Eras tour on Friday, citing \u2018high demands on ticketing systems and insufficient remaining ticket inventory.\u2019<\/p>\n

In a tweet, Ticketmaster said \u2018Due to extraordinarily high demands on ticketing systems and insufficient remaining ticket inventory to meet that demand, tomorrow\u2019s public on-sale for Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour has been cancelled.\u2019<\/p>\n

Now, Taylor has spoken out about the situation in a statement posted to her Instagram Stories, and she said she is just as \u2018pissed off\u2019 as everyone else is.<\/p>\n

\u2018It goes without saying that I\u2019m extremely protective of my fans,\u2019 she began in the lengthy post.<\/p>\n

\u2018We\u2019ve been doing this for decades together and over the years, I\u2019ve brought so many elements of my career in house.\u2019<\/p>\n

Taylor went on to explain \u2013 without mentioning the company by name \u2013 that she chose to use Ticketmaster\u2019s Verified Fan system because she thought it would \u2018improve the quality of her fans\u2019 experience,\u2019 despite it being \u2018really difficult\u2019 for her to \u2018trust an outside entity.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018I\u2019ve done this SPECIFICALLY to improve the quality of my fans\u2019 experience by doing it myself with my team, who care as much about my fans as I do,\u2019 she continued.<\/p>\n

The Cardigan songstress added that there were \u2018multiple reasons why people had such a hard time trying to get tickets\u2019 and that she\u2019s currently \u2018trying to figure out how the situation can be improved moving forward.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018I\u2019m not going to make excuses for anyone because we asked them, multiple times, if they could handle this kind of demand and we were assured they could,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n

\u2018It\u2019s truly amazing that 2.4 million people got tickets, but it really pisses me off that a lot of them feel like they went through several bear attacks to get them.\u2019<\/p>\n

She concluded her message with a note to those who weren\u2019t able to get their hands on a ticket, writing, \u2018All I can say is that my hope is to provide more opportunities for us all to get together and sing these songs.<\/p>\n

After the ticket fiasco, thousands of Taylor\u2019s fans took to social media to share their heartbreak, posting videos of themselves sobbing and begging for Taylor to step in and do something.<\/p>\n

The situation also launched an investigation into Ticketmaster from the the Justice Department, according to the\u00a0New York Times.<\/p>\n

\u2018The Justice Department has opened an antitrust investigation into the owner of Ticketmaster, whose sale of Taylor Swift concert tickets descended into chaos this week, said two people with knowledge of the matter,\u2019 the outlet reported.<\/p>\n

\u2018The investigation is focused on whether Live Nation Entertainment has abused its power over the multibillion-dollar live music industry.\u2019<\/p>\n

Ticketmaster blamed a \u2018staggering number of bot attacks\u2019 for causing a tidal wave of problems for\u00a0Swift<\/span>\u00a0fans seeking to purchase tickets for her Eras Tour.<\/p>\n

On November 1, Swift, 32\u00a0announced a 27-date tour across 20 U.S. cities, running from March to August next year \u2013 sparking fan chaos.<\/p>\n

Now, after Tennessee\u2019s attorney general Jonathan Skrmetti revealed he was launching an investigation into Ticketmaster, the site has issued a lengthy response blaming bots and fans without invite codes for causing \u2018unprecedented traffic\u2019 of 3.5billion users \u2013 four times the normal amount.<\/p>\n

A statement read: \u2018The Eras on sale made one thing clear: Taylor Swift is an unstoppable force and continues to set records. We strive to make ticket buying as easy as possible for fans, but that hasn\u2019t been the case for many people trying to buy tickets for the Eras Tour. We want to share some information to help explain what happened.<\/p>\n

Ticketmaster explained that fans needed to register with their system Verified Fan before the sale began, which is designed to \u2018help manage high demand shows \u2013 identifying real humans and weeding out bots.\u2019<\/p>\n

The statement continued: \u2018Based on fan interest at registration we knew this would be big. Over 3.5 million people pre-registered for Taylor\u2019s Verified Fan, which is the largest registration in history.<\/p>\n

Fiasco: Tickets went on sale on Tuesday, but what Ticketmaster termed a \u2018historically unprecedented demand\u2019 from millions of fans saw the site crash repeatedly and the process descend into a fiasco (pictured September)<\/p>\n

\u2018The huge demand for Taylor\u2019s tour informed the artist team\u2019s decision to add additional dates \u2013 doubling the tour and number of tickets available so more fans could make it to shows.<\/p>\n

\u2018Historically, around 40% of invited fans actually show up and buy tickets, and most purchase an average of 3 tickets. So working with the artist team, around 1.5 million people were invited to participate in the on sale for all 52 show dates, including the 47 sold by Ticketmaster.<\/p>\n

\u2018The remaining 2 million Verified Fans were put on the waiting list.\u2019<\/p>\n

Adding the demand for Taylor \u2018broke records and parts of our website\u2019, the statement continued: \u2018Historically, working with Verified Fan invite codes has worked as we\u2019ve been able to manage the volume coming into the site to shop for tickets.<\/p>\n

\u2018However, this time the staggering number of bot attacks as well as fans who didn\u2019t have invite codes drove unprecedented traffic on our site, resulting in 3.5 billion total system requests \u2013 4x our previous peak.<\/p>\n

\u2018Never before has a Verified Fan on sale sparked so much attention \u2013 or uninvited volume. This disrupted the predictability and reliability that is the hallmark of our Verified Fan platform.<\/p>\n

\u2018It usually takes us about an hour to sell through a stadium show, but we slowed down some sales and pushed back others to stabilize the systems. The trade off was longer wait times in queue for some fans.<\/p>\n

\u2018Overall, we estimate about 15% of interactions across the site experienced issues, and that\u2019s 15% too many, including passcode validation errors that caused fans to lose tickets they had carted.\u2019<\/p>\n

They added: \u2018The biggest venues and artists turn to us because we have the leading ticketing technology in the world \u2013 that doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s perfect, and clearly for Taylor\u2019s on sale it wasn\u2019t. But we\u2019re always working to improve the ticket buying experience. Especially for high demand on sales, which continue to test new limits.<\/p>\n

\u2018Even when a high demand on sale goes flawlessly from a tech perspective, many fans are left empty handed. For example: based on the volume of traffic to our site, Taylor would need to perform over 900 stadium shows (almost 20x the number of shows she is doing)\u2026that\u2019s a stadium show every single night for the next 2.5 years.<\/p>\n

\u2018While it\u2019s impossible for everyone to get tickets to these shows, we know we can do more to improve the experience and that\u2019s what we\u2019re focused on.\u2019<\/p>\n

The Eras Tour would sell a staggering and record-breaking 2 million tickets in just one day.<\/p>\n

Response: The site has issued a lengthy response blaming bots and fans without invite codes for causing \u2018unprecedented traffic\u2019 of 3.5billion users \u2013 four times the normal amount.<\/p>\n

This comes as AG\u00a0SkrmettI\u00a0<\/span>launched an investigation into Ticketmaster after the\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>ticketing debacle, digging into the ticketing giant\u2019s procedures \u2018to ensure that no consumer protection laws were violated.\u2019<\/p>\n

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/span>\u00a0on Tuesday called for Ticketmaster to be broken up.<\/p>\n

\u2018Daily reminder that Ticketmaster is a monopoly, it\u2019s merger with LiveNation should never have been approved, and they need to be reigned in,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n

\u2018Break them up.\u2019<\/p>\n

Senator Richard Blumenthal agreed, tweeting: \u2018Taylor Swift\u2019s tour sale is a perfect example of how the Live Nation\/Ticketmaster merger harms consumers by creating a near-monopoly.<\/p>\n

\u2018I\u2019ve long urged DOJ to investigate the state of competition in the ticketing industry. Consumers deserve better than this anti-hero behavior.\u2019<\/p>\n

Jonathan Skrmetti said that his office had received numerous complaints, with the official account tweeting on Tuesday: \u2018Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti is concerned about consumer complaints related to @Ticketmaster\u2019s pre-sale of @taylorswift13 concert tickets.<\/p>\n

\u2018He and his Consumer Protection team will use every available tool to ensure that no consumer protection laws were violated.\u2019<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Skrmetti said he wanted to make sure there was no wrongdoing.<\/p>\n

\u2018We received a number of complaints, and there\u2019s been significant press coverage that the ticket sale process did not go smoothly,\u2019 he told ABC News\u2019 affiliate\u00a0WATE.<\/p>\n

\u2018There are no allegations, at this time, about any misconduct. But as the attorney general, it\u2019s my job to ensure that the consumer protection laws and antitrust laws in Tennessee are being honored.\u2019<\/p>\n

He added that he was concerned about a potential monopoly.<\/p>\n

\u2018We\u2019re talking about a company with an extremely dominant market share, I\u2019ve heard it may be up to 70 percent of the concert venue, ticket sales.<\/p>\n

\u2018Anytime you have that kind of concentration of market share, there\u2019s the risk that the lack of competition will not just drive up prices for consumers.<\/p>\n

\u2018It will also reduce the quality of the product and potentially this is a situation where the quality of the product is reduced.\u2019<\/p>\n

Ticketmaster has not responded to Skrmetti\u2019s investigation, but has apologized to customers.<\/p>\n

In a statement on Tuesday the company said waiting fans should \u2018please hang tight,\u2019 citing \u2018historically unprecedented demand\u2019 from millions.<\/p>\n

The company also delayed one of the presales a full day.<\/p>\n

The American ticketing industry, which the company Ticketmaster overwhelmingly dominates, has for years left concertgoers frustrated by hidden fees, soaring costs, rampant scalpers and limited tickets due to presales.<\/p>\n

In 2010, Ticketmaster and the event promotion company behemoth Live Nation merged, which Congressman David Cicilline on Tuesday dubbed \u2018an unchecked monopoly.\u2019<\/p>\n

He and other legislators in 2021 called for a Justice Department probe into \u2018Live Nation\u2019s efforts to jack up prices and strangle competition.\u2019<\/p>\n

Swift fans have an enormous online presence and a zeal that leaves them well-positioned to call attention to their plight, but Krista Brown \u2013 an analyst at the American Economic Liberties Project, which has urged unwinding the merger \u2013 said the chaos \u2018is just the latest example.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018This isn\u2019t about one artist\u2019s concert or one website crashing,\u2019 Brown told AFP.<\/p>\n

\u2018Ticketmaster and its parent company Live Nation Entertainment have a monopoly over the industry that lets it regularly abuse its power, leaving customers, artists and venues at its mercy.\u2019<\/p>\n

Live Nation recently has reported soaring demand after several pent-up pandemic years, saying ticket sales are up 37 percent compared to 2019.<\/p>\n

But while fans have complained of skyrocketing costs \u2013 Bruce Springsteen show prices in the thousands of dollars triggered uproar earlier this year \u2013 Ticketmaster responded to a recent query from Representative Bill Pascrell by blaming the resale ticketing market, and saying that \u2018promoters and artist representatives set pricing strategy and price range parameters.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018As the resale ticketing market has grown to more than a $10 billion industry over the past few years, artists and teams have lost that revenue to resellers,\u2019 Ticketmaster said, saying event organizers were trying to \u2018recapture that lost revenue\u2019 via \u2018market-based pricing.\u2019<\/p>\n

Ticketmaster claims the system give fans \u2018fair and safe access\u2019 to in-demand tickets with its FAQ page explaining: \u2018The prices are adjusted according to supply and demand, similar to how airline tickets and hotel rooms are sold.<\/p>\n

Fans of Swift had been vocal Tuesday about problems purchasing tickets for her The Eras Tour with a pre-sale code through Ticketmaster<\/p>\n

\u2018The goal is to give the most passionate fans fair and safe access to the most in-demand tickets while allowing the artists and everyone involved in staging live events to price tickets closer to their fair value.\u2019<\/p>\n

However, \u2018dynamic pricing\u2019 seems to have caused nothing but headaches for the fans of music\u2019s most popular acts like Taylor Swift, My Chemical Romance and Drake.<\/p>\n

Tour prices have surged by hundreds if not thousands of dollars in recent years.<\/p>\n

Swift will kick off the American leg of her tour March 18 at Glendale, Arizona\u2019s State Farm Stadium, and will continue through an August 5 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n
