The Los Angeles Lakers have nothing to worry about Luka Don\u010di\u0107\u2018s long-term future as the Slovenian star is \u201cfully committed\u201d with the franchise, according to ESPN\u2019s Tim MacMahon.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would be shocked if there\u2019s not some sort of extension this summer, you know, and what that looks like, there\u2019s a lot of factors\u2026 with what I know of Luka, and I haven\u2019t talked to him directly about this, but you know, talking to people who know Luka well, I think he wants to give the Lakers, like, he\u2019s fully committed to L.A. now,\u201d MacMahon said on the \u201cDan Patrick Show\u201d on Monday. \u201cHis heart was broken, but he\u2019s fully committed now to the Lakers, and you know, his goal now is to win championships with that franchise.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\n

Don\u010di\u0107 is extension-eligible starting Aug. 2 and as he told ESPN\u2019s Malika Andrews in an interview before the playoffs, his loyalty is now with the Lakers and he intends to stay in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

Luka Expected to Sign Lakers Extension<\/h2>\n

The new Lakers star is expected to sign an extension,\u00a0according to The Athletic\u2019s Jovan Buha and Sam Amick.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat fact might seem like a technicality to some, as Don\u010di\u0107 is widely expected to commit to a long-term Lakers future at some point,\u201d Buha and Amick reported.<\/em><\/p>\n

The only mystery at this point is for how much and how long?<\/p>\n

ESPN\u2019s front office insider Bobby Marks sees Don\u010di\u0107 signing a shorter deal than the four-year, $229 million max extension the Lakers could offer.<\/p>\n

\u201cMore likely: a three-year, $165 million extension that includes a player option in the third year. The short-term extension allows Doncic to reenter free agency sooner and potentially recoup the $345 million he lost when he was traded from the Mavericks,\u201d\u00a0Marks wrote in his offseason guide for the Lakers.<\/em><\/p>\n

Two days after the Lakers were eliminated in the postseason, Don\u010di\u0107 was\u00a0spotted\u00a0leaving\u00a0Craig\u2019s in West Hollywood with coach JJ Redick and team president Rob Pelinka.<\/p>\n

NBA insiders Jake Fischer and Marc Stein reported that Don\u010di\u0107\u2019s business manager Lara Beth Seager also attended the private meeting.<\/p>\n

Veiled Shot at Luka?<\/h2>\n

Redick\u2019s comments about getting into championship shape during his end-of-season press conference were seen as a veiled shot at\u00a0Luka Don\u010di\u0107.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll start with the offseason and the work that\u2019s required in an offseason to be in championship shape,\u201d\u00a0Redick told reporters on Thursday. \u201cAnd we have a ways to go as a roster. And certainly, there are individuals who were in phenomenal shape. There are certainly other ones that could have been in better shape. That\u2019s where my mind goes immediately, is we have to get in championship shape.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cGet Up\u201d host Mike Greenberg and ESPN\u2019s NBA insider Brian Windhorst agreed that Redick was referring to Don\u010di\u0107, whose poor conditioning and off-court habits were reported as reasons why the\u00a0Dallas Mavericks\u00a0traded him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere isn\u2019t any question that he is talking directly to Luka Don\u010di\u0107 there, right?\u201d\u00a0Greenberg asked Windhorst.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d Windhorst replied. \u201cI can see Nico Harrison sort of lighting a cigar, watching that press conference.\u201d<\/p>\n

Don\u010di\u0107 missed 32 games this season, including 22 due to a nagging calf injury which he sustained while still in Dallas. In their 103-96 Game 5 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves which ended the Lakers\u2019 season, Don\u010di\u0107 hurt his back before halftime.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
