THE GENIUS COLLABORATION<\/h3>\n

The track, which has become a fan favorite, was the result of a unique collaboration between Swift, longtime collaborator Joe Alwyn (under the pseudonym William Bowery), and Aaron Dessner of The National.<\/p>\n

\u201cAaron hit me up and said, \u2018I think there\u2019s a song Taylor wants you to sing on,\u2019\u201d Vernon explains. \u201cI was like, \u2018Taylor?!\u2019 And he tells me she\u2019s been writing to some of the Big Red Machine demos. She heard something in them \u2014 and turned them into what I think are some of her strongest lyrics ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dessner and Swift\u2019s creative connection proved to be electric. \u201cShe stepped right into our world and elevated everything,\u201d Vernon said. \u201cI just watched it happen. It felt like she belonged there.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the most unforgettable moments for Vernon came when he first heard how Swift had arranged the song. \u201cUp to a certain point, we had the bones of it. Then I added that line \u2014 \u2018So step right out\u2019 \u2014 and when we got the track back… boom. Confetti. Everything just exploded emotionally. It was a trip.\u201d<\/p>\n

Swift herself has described the process as deeply moving and creatively satisfying. According to her, the song began with Joe Alwyn playing the haunting piano line and singing what would become Vernon\u2019s part \u2014 the striking opening verse.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was entranced,\u201d Swift said. \u201cIt was obvious it needed to be a duet because Joe\u2019s voice is so low and rich, and the contrast just felt right.\u201d<\/p>\n

When it came time to consider who might sing opposite her, Swift admitted she was too nervous to say what she really wanted: Bon Iver. \u201cI couldn\u2019t say it out loud. If I said it and Justin said no, it would\u2019ve hurt too much,\u201d she confessed. \u201cSo I just sent it to Aaron and said, \u2018This is hopefully a duet… who do you think?\u2019 And Aaron said, \u2018I think Justin would love this.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
