After guiding the\u00a0Golden State Warriors\u00a0to fend off the\u00a0Memphis Grizzlies\u00a0121-116 on Tuesday, April 15, to book a playoff berth, coach Steve Kerr waged a bigger battle after his first play-in tournament win.<\/p>\n

Kerr made a defiant stand against the Trump administration with a statement shirt postgame.<\/p>\n

The Warriors coach proudly wore a Harvard University shirt in a show of solidarity with the Ivy League school in their fight against the Trump administration over a set of demands that they believe curtails freedom of speech.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt like a great day to wear it,\u201d\u00a0Kerr told reporters.<\/p>\n

According to Kerr, the shirt was a gift from Harvard men\u2019s basketball coach Tommy Amaker when the Warriors had practice in the school\u2019s facility before a November game in Boston against the defending champion Celtics.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe in academic freedom,\u201d Kerr said. \u201cI think it\u2019s crucial for all of our institutions to be able to handle their own business the way they want to and they should not be shaken down and told what to teach or what to say by our government. That\u2019s the dumbest thing I\u2019ve ever heard but it\u2019s kind of par for the course right now. So, yes this is me supporting Harvard, my way to go to stand up to the bully.\u201d<\/p>\n

Steve Kerr Echoes Harvard President\u2019s Strong Statement<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Kerr\u2019s defiant message to the Trump administration echoed Harvard\u2019s president, Alan Garber, who wrote a statement on Monday, April 14, condemning the Trump administration\u2019s demands which he said violate\u00a0\u201cHarvard\u2019s First Amendment rights and [exceed] the statutory limits of the government\u2019s authority.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo government \u2014 regardless of which party is in power \u2014 should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit and hire, and which areas of study and inquiry they can pursue,\u201d\u00a0Garber wrote.<\/p>\n

Politico reported\u00a0on Tuesday that federal officials have frozen more than $2 billion in grants to the university after it refused to comply with the \u201cpolicy changes requested by the Trump administration, including to crack down on student protests, change admissions and hiring practices and submit to government audits.\u201d<\/p>\n

Steve Kerr Backs Losing Presidential Candidate<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Kerr, alongside Warriors franchise star\u00a0Stephen Curry,\u00a0endorsed\u00a0Kamala Harris in the past presidential elections.<\/p>\n

Harris was a former Attorney General in California and served as vice president under Joe Biden\u2019s term. She was also a self-confessed Warriors fan.<\/p>\n

On August 19, 2024, Kerr took the stage at the DNC in support of Harris\u2019s presidential campaign.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know very well that speaking out about politics these days comes with risks,\u201d Kerr said at the United Center, where he captured three consecutive championships with the\u00a0Bulls\u00a0between 1995 and 1998. \u201cI can see the \u2018shut up and whistle\u2019 tweets being fired off as we speak. But I also knew, as soon as I was asked, that it was too important as an American citizen not to speak up in an election of this magnitude.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kerr invoked Curry\u2019s signature celebration to close his speech.<\/p>\n
