BOSTON\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Kevon Looney\u00a0crashed the offensive glass Wednesday night, as he so often does for the\u00a0Golden State Warriors, at TD Garden\u00a0\u2014 where he helped them beat the Boston Celtics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Again.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWhatever you need, he\u2019s there for you,\u201d head coach\u00a0Steve Kerr\u00a0said afterward.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Twice in the final two minutes of Golden State\u2019s 118-112 victory over the defending NBA champions, Looney collected his teammates\u2019 misses and promptly placed them in the basket. He closed at center with Stephen Curry, Buddy Hield\u00a0\u2014 or Gary Payton II on defensive possessions\u00a0\u2014 Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Green.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In 16 minutes, Looney had six points and 10 rebounds \u2014 garnering\u00a0postgame praise from Curry.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cVery reminiscent of every big moment he\u2019s been a part of to help us win at the highest level,\u201d the star guard said while alluding to Looney\u2019s contributions to Golden State\u2019s 2021-22 championship team. Looney that postseason started 13 games and led the Warriors with an average of 7.6 rebounds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In a Game 4 road victory over the Celtics in the NBA Finals \u2014 also one of Curry\u2019s most iconic outings \u2014 Looney came off the bench to secure 11 rebounds while playing to a game-high plus-21.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s just super smart,\u201d Curry added. \u201cWe know he knows where to be at all times and how to play position basketball. So, it\u2019s been great.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Spurring Looney\u2019s start this season are the offseason changes he made to his diet and\u00a0workout regimen. Intermittent fasting with extensive cardio helped the 10th-year veteran shed 15-plus pounds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He reported to training camp in top condition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cHe\u2019s moving well and still able to be physical,\u201d Curry said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

As a result, Looney is averaging 8.4 rebounds in 16.3 minutes to lead the Warriors, who lead the NBA in rebounding again with 49.5 rebounds per game. Looney\u2019s 4.3 offensive rebounds per game rank third in the NBA, one-tenth behind the Clippers\u2019 Ivica Zubac and Nuggets\u2019 Nikola Jokic who are doing it in 34-plus minutes per game. As a sturdy screen setter and defender who knows the nuances of late-game situations, Looney is counted on by\u00a0Kerr to close or steady challenging situations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

After Wednesday\u2019s victory over the Celtics, Kerr called him a \u201cwinner.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cOne thing with (Looney), even though he\u2019s not a 3-point shooter or a lob threat, he just generates extra possessions for us all the time,\u201d Kerr said. \u201cSometimes it\u2019s a tip-in or two like he had (against the Celtics). Sometimes it\u2019s a kickback out for 3.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re sharper across the board \u2014 top to bottom. We\u2019ve been focusing on details,\u201d Looney added Wednesday night. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of talent in this league and all the small things could change a game, change the season. \u2026 I think everyone\u2019s been locked in to start the season.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
