Kansas City is likely to have a crowded running back room this season, but the head coach still believes in his starter.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Kansas City Chiefs\u2019 starting running back Isiah Pacheco missed nine games of the 2024 season with a fractured fibula, allowing the team to bring Kareem Hunt back for the first time since his 2018 release.<\/p>\n

Pacheco ended up gaining just 310 yards (and a touchdown) on 83 attempts over six regular-season games \u2014 a career-low 3.7 yards per attempt.<\/p>\n

Hunt has been re-signed for 2025. The team has also brought in former San Francisco 49ers running back Elijah Johnson \u2014 and is widely considered to be prioritizing acquiring another one from the NFL Draft\u2019s deep class of running backs.<\/p>\n

But head coach Andy Reid is still standing behind Pacheco.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he\u2019ll be even better this year,\u201d Reid told reporters on Monday morning at the league\u2019s meetings in Palm Beach, Florida, per The Kansas City Star. \u201cHe was forcing that thing coming back.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Reid wasn\u2019t suggesting that Pacheco wasn\u2019t ready to return. Instead, he was saying that after re-watching last season\u2019s games, he can now see that Pacheco wasn’t playing up to his usual standard.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was physically OK to go,\u201d insisted Reid. \u201cBut when you\u2019re looking at [the film], it\u2019s minute stuff \u2014 just maybe that ability to cut as quick as he did before. Now it\u2019s still quick, but you\u2019re talking inches here. Was it what he could do before? Well, it wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Reid isn\u2019t surprised his third-year running back worked so hard to get back to the field.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost guys probably wouldn\u2019t have come back [from his injury],\u201d he noted, \u201cbut if you know him for about a minute, you\u2019ll know that he wasn\u2019t going to be held back.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Still, Reid believes the film revealed Pacheco was improving after his return \u2014 and with a full offseason of preparation, should be good to go for the coming season.<\/p>\n
