Almost a half-century ago, the New York Yankees broke their World Series title drought of 14 years, at the time their longest since 1921 when the Bronx Bombers played in their first World Series. And they broke it in dramatic fashion, thanks to Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson.<\/p>\n
In Game 6 of the 1977 World Series, Jackson belted three home runs, lifting the Yankees to an 8-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers, giving New York its first World Series trophy since 1962 \u2014 and forever earning Jackson the title \u201cMr. October.\u201d<\/p>\n
In 2024, the Yankees found a new \u201cMr. October,\u201d Giancarlo Stanton, who smashed seven home runs in the postseason including two in the World Series when the Yankees faced the Dodgers one more time.<\/p>\n
In this,\u00a0the 12th World Series matchup between the two iconic franchises \u2014 seven when the Dodgers still played in Brooklyn \u2014 even Stanton\u2019s power was not enough, as the Yankees went down to defeat in five games, only the fourth time the Dodgers have prevailed in the rivalry.<\/p>\n
Stanton\u2019s postseason heroics have not been limited to last season. In 172 plate appearances spread over 41 playoff and World Series games for the Yankees since 2020, Stanton has totaled 18 home runs. That\u2019s one home run every 9.6 times he comes to plate.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, however, the injury-plagued Yankees got even more bad news, and they\u2019ve had a lot this spring.<\/p>\n
They already knew Stanton \u2014 entering the 11th season of\u00a0the 13-year, $325 million contract\u00a0he signed in 2014 when he was with the Miami Marlins \u2014 would miss time in 2025 with pain in both of his elbows. He has missed all of spring training so far.<\/p>\n
Now, longtime baseball insider Jon Heyman reports\u00a0in his\u00a0New York Post\u00a0column\u00a0that Stanton has another injury on top of the twin elbow ailments.<\/p>\n
\u201cStanton is said to be dealing with a chronic calf issue as well as the elbow injuries,\u201d Heyman reported \u2014 adding that the elbow issues were \u201cthe bigger problem\u201d because the 35-year-old who has hit 429\u00a0regular season home runs may end up requiring surgery on the elbows. And that is a doomsday scenario for Stanton\u2019s 2025 season, and possibly for the Yankees as well.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cAt this point, the Yankees are left hoping that Stanton can contribute in the second half of the season, but his injury situation is far from encouraging,\u201d\u00a0wrote\u00a0Empire Sports Media\u00a0founder\u00a0Alexander Wilson on Friday. \u201cIf surgery becomes inevitable, the team may have to prepare for life without their slugger for the entire year.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n According to Heyman\u2019s report, \u201cMemorial Day is one optimistic estimate heard for Stanton now.\u201d<\/p>\n But that date, which\u00a0falls on May 26 this year, does indeed sound optimistic given Stanton\u2019s newly reported calf injury and the fact that mutiple treatments he has received on his elbows appear to have been minimally effective at best.<\/p>\n \u201cStanton\u2019s elbow pain isn\u2019t just a minor setback\u2014it\u2019s severe enough that he\u2019s gone through extensive treatment just to avoid surgery.<\/p>\n Even if the PRP injections help, there\u2019s no guarantee they will solve the problem long-term. If his pain doesn\u2019t improve over the next few weeks, he might be forced to undergo surgery on both elbows,\u201d Wilson wrote.<\/p>\n PRP,\u00a0or \u201cplatelet-rich plasma\u201d injections, involve injecting a patient\u2019s own blood plasma prepared with a high concentration of platelets \u2014 a type of blood cell that promotes healing of damaged tissue \u2014 directly into the patient\u2019s injured area.<\/p>\n \u201cThe reality,\u201d Wilson continued, \u201cis that Stanton\u2019s health remains a ticking time bomb.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Almost a half-century ago, the New York Yankees broke their World Series title drought of 14 years, at the time their longest since 1921 when the Bronx… <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":43280,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-43279","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-mlb"],"yoast_head":"\nPostseason Hero\u2019s Health a \u2018Ticking Time Bomb\u2019<\/h2>\n
