In 2019, Taylor Swift felt her career was in an excellent position when she signed to a new record label. She had more creative control over her music and was prepared to utilize it to the fullest extent. As she prepared to release her first album with the label, though, her old label sold her catalog of music, thus wrenching it from her control. The turn of events devastated her and made her feel that there was no way to move forward.<\/p>\n
In 2019, Scooter Braun\u2019s Ithaca Holdings purchased Big Machine Records, Swift\u2019s first label. As a result, she lost ownership of the masters of her first six studio albums. She said the move made her feel helpless.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith the Scooter thing, my masters were being sold to someone who actively wanted them for nefarious reasons, in my opinion,\u201d Swift told Time in 2023.<\/p>\n

She said she initially saw no path forward for herself.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was so knocked on my a** by the sale of my music, and to whom it was sold,\u201d she said. \u201cI was like, \u2018Oh, they got me beat now. This is it. I don\u2019t know what to do.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Before long, people in Swift\u2019s life began encouraging her to re-record her old albums. She initially pushed back against the suggestion.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019d run into Kelly Clarkson and she would go, \u2018Just redo it,\u2019\u201d Swift said. \u201cMy dad kept saying it to me too. I\u2019d look at them and go, \u2018How can I possibly do that?\u2019 Nobody wants to redo their homework if on the way to school, the wind blows your book report away.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ultimately, however, she released\u00a0Fearless (Taylor\u2019s Version), Red (Taylor\u2019s Version), Speak Now (Taylor\u2019s Version),\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a01989 (Taylor\u2019s Version).<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s all in how you deal with loss,\u201d she said. \u201cI respond to extreme pain with defiance.\u201d<\/p>\n Just a few years before this, Swift felt her career was in another precarious position. After she expressed frustration that Kanye West referred to her as a \u201cb****\u201d in his song \u201cFamous,\u201d Kim Kardashian released a video. In it, Swift and West discussed the song, and she seemingly indicated that she had no problem with the song. Public opinion quickly turned against her.<\/p>\n \u201cYou have a fully manufactured frame job, in an illegally recorded phone call, which Kim Kardashian edited and then put out to say to everyone that I was a liar,\u201d she said. \u201cThat took me down psychologically to a place I\u2019ve never been before.\u201d<\/p>\n She spent time out of the public eye, and later released the album Reputation in response to the situation.
