Smith announces Patrick Mahomes\u2019 new criteria for reentering GOAT debate.<\/h1>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe reason why you\u2019ve got to get at least five, you gotta overcome the two bad performances in the Super Bowl.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><main role=\"main\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.thecomeback.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/94\/2025\/02\/USATSI_13770172_168384754_lowres-e1739385390241-832x447.jpg\" alt=\"image\" data-pin-no-hover=\"true\" \/>\u00a0<\/main><main role=\"main\">It was this time last week that we were already having GOAT debates about Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady under the assumption that the.<\/main><main role=\"main\">Kansas City Chiefs would beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX and complete an unprecedented Super Bowl three-peat.<\/main>As the old clich\u00e9 goes, what a difference a week makes.<\/p>\n<p>Not only did the Chiefs\u2019 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles solidify that Brady \u2014 who called the game for Fox \u2014 is, in fact.<\/p>\n<p>the Greatest of All-Time, but Mahomes\u2019 performance was so poor that it brought an end to such conversations for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n<p>While Mahomes was always going to leave New Orleans with at least three fewer Lombardi Trophies than Brady\u2019s seven.<\/p>\n<p>the clock on a potential three-peat is now reset, meaning that it will be at least three more years .<\/p>\n<p>and likely longer \u2014 before the Chiefs quarterback can do anything that the now-Fox analyst didn\u2019t do from a Super Bowl standpoint.<\/p>\n<p>So what can Patrick Mahomes do to reignite the GOAT debate he was very much a part of just four days ago? Enter Stephen A. Smith.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat Mahomes needs to do to get in the GOAT conversation again: You gotta win two more titles.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Cause you gotta get at least five,\u201d Smith said on Wednesday\u2019s episode of\u00a0<em>First Take<\/em>. \u201c<\/p>\n<p>And the reason why you\u2019ve got to get at least five, you gotta overcome the two bad performances in the Super Bowl.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Stephen A. And the reason why you&#39;ve got to get at least five, you gotta overcome the two bad performances in the Super Bowl.&quot; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/V4NBeOmgFc\">pic.twitter.com\/V4NBeOmgFc<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/awfulannouncing\/status\/1889703247511756907?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 12, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Smith went on to point out that Mahomes hasn\u2019t just quarterbacked the Chiefs to two Super Bowl losses.<\/p>\n<p>but that both defeats \u2014 including one to Tom Brady\u2019s Buccaneers at the end of the 2020 season \u2014 came in blowout fashion.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Brady\u2019s three Super Bowl losses came by three, four and eight points, respectively, an apparent indication .<\/p>\n<p>that those championship defeats were less embarrassing than the two Mahomes has now been a part of.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the Super Bowl losses to Tampa Bay and now Philadelphia, he\u2019s been outscored by 40. Both games, they\u2019ve lost by more than 18 points.<\/p>\n<p>Only him and John Elway have that distinction as starting quarterbacks in the Super Bowl,\u201d Smith noted. \u201c<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s hard to overcome.<\/p>\n<p>One title ain\u2019t gonna do that.<\/p>\n<p>You need two more to get back in the conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But while all losses might not be created equally, the same could be said of wins.<\/p>\n<p>which is why Smith believes that Mahomes doesn\u2019t need to match Brady\u2019s seven titles for the debate to be restarted.<\/p>\n<p>For now, however, we know we have at least a two-year break from the GOAT conversation according to sports media\u2019s most prominent debater.<\/p>\n<p>whose criteria will surely be adhered to if\/when the Chiefs are once again playing in the Super Bowl a year from now.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stephen A.
