Jay Kornegay understands the numbers he\u2019s about to share might seem silly without context. Kornegay, Executive VP of the Westgate SuperBook Las Vegas, knows all about how Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has performed this year, which includes:<\/p>\n

\"Pat<\/p>\n

\u2022 Only six passing touchdowns in six games;<\/p>\n

\u2022 A league-leading eight interceptions;<\/p>\n

\u2022 The QB admitting at times he hasn\u2019t played well while being helped to a 6-0 start by KC\u2019s defense and running game. So yeah, one look at Mahomes\u2019 NFL MVP odds \u2014 from an oddsmaker at the world\u2019s largest race and sportsbook at SuperBook \u2014 might not make much sense.<\/p>\n

Those facts are true about Mahomes, yet … he\u2019s still third in MVP betting odds, behind only the Ravens\u2019 Lamar Jackson and Bills\u2019 Josh Allen. So, what\u2019s going on here? Tammy Ljungblad tljungblad@kcstar.com \u201cYou can\u2019t just look at it like, \u2018Right at this moment,\u2019\u201d Kornegay told The Star.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve got to look at the potential of what he can bring to the table, and we all know that\u2019s a lot.\u201d As of this week, Jackson was the betting favorite to win NFL MVP at SuperBook at plus-225; in other words, if a bettor placed $100 on Jackson, that person would get their $100 back plus $225 more if Jackson wins the award.<\/em><\/p>\n

Allen is at plus-450, while Mahomes is plus-500. And Kornegay is clear that those odds for Mahomes aren\u2019t typical for a quarterback with his early production. \u201cThere\u2019s a reason why he\u2019s 5-to-1 (odds) \u2014 multiple reasons why he\u2019s 5-to-1,\u201d Kornegay said. \u201c<\/p>\n

But one of the reasons is he\u2019s so popular still, despite the below-average stats.\u201d Kornegay says the sports gaming world loves winners, and almost no one has had recent success like these Chiefs with Mahomes. That means they also accumulate a lot of betting tickets.<\/p>\n

Whether it\u2019s for KC to win the Super Bowl or Mahomes to take MVP, Kornegay is used to seeing a volume of wagers on the Chiefs.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve got to look at the brand name \u2018Mahomes\u2019 and consider what he\u2019s done in past years, what he\u2019s done in Super Bowls,\u201d Kornegay said. \u201cAnd we still have more than half the season left.\u201d This, Kornegay said, is why Mahomes\u2019 MVP odds haven\u2019t moved that much despite a subpar few weeks.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s hit a level of play before that could earn him the award again \u2014 even in a season that hasn\u2019t started well.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we kind of know what the ending is, and he\u2019s going to be right there on top of the mountain. Whether it\u2019s with another ring or not, we know he and the Chiefs are going to be right at the top.<\/p>\n

And so there\u2019s no reason for us to be creating a lot of liability (by changing Mahomes\u2019 odds), based off stats only.\u201d Kornegay, a 2024 inductee in the Sports Betting Hall of Fame, is quick to admit that perception remains a significant part of what\u2019s going on here.<\/p>\n

He uses the example of Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins; if Cousins had started with six touchdowns and eight interceptions through six games, Kornegay would expect his MVP odds to be somewhere around 50-to-1, as he lacks the prestige that Mahomes currently has.<\/p>\n

And even if Mahomes continues to have down stats in the next few weeks, Kornegay says it would take quite a bit for him to even get down to 10-to-1 in MVP chances.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd when it all comes down to it, he\u2019s going to be right in the mix of MVP, because the team is doing well, they have a terrific chance of three-repeating and we know what he\u2019s capable of.\u201d It\u2019s why Kornegay, personally, says there\u2019s no way he\u2019s counting out Mahomes to win the award this year.<\/p>\n

And why sportsbooks aren\u2019t rushing to give bettors better odds \u2014 or a potentially bigger cashout \u2014 if they do choose to wager on Mahomes for MVP. \u201cThere\u2019s just too much history, too much success that surrounds that name,\u201d Kornegay said. \u201cWe\u2019re not that dumb.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
