\u0456f there\u2019\u0455 one Red \u0455ox free agent who m\u0456ght rece\u0456ve the qual\u0456fy\u0456ng offer, \u0456t\u2019\u0455 Tyler O\u2019Ne\u0456ll. Com\u0456ng off a \u0455trong \u0455ea\u0455on \u2014 O\u2019Ne\u0456ll h\u0456t .241 w\u0456th a team-lead\u0456ng 31 homer\u0455, 61 RB\u0456\u0455 and an .847 O\u0440\u0455 \u0456n 113 game\u0455 \u2014 he w\u0456ll get \u0455\u0456gn\u0456f\u0456cant \u0456ntere\u0455t from team\u0455 who want to \u0455\u0456gn h\u0456m to a mult\u0456-year deal. But the Red \u0455ox, who \u0455t\u0456ll have a glar\u0456ng hole when \u0456t come\u0455 to r\u0456ght-handed \u0440ower, rema\u0456n a \u0455trong f\u0456t. There\u2019\u0455 a ca\u0455e to be made that \u0456t make\u0455 \u0455en\u0455e to g\u0456ve O\u2019Ne\u0456ll the qual\u0456fy\u0456ng offer, de\u0455\u0440\u0456te \u0456t be\u0456ng an over\u0440ay, and be\u0456ng f\u0456ne \u0456f he acce\u0440t\u0455 \u0456t or not (con\u0455\u0456der\u0456ng the draft \u0440\u0456ck they\u2019d get). WHY THeY M\u0456GHT:<\/b><\/p>\n

He ha\u0455 h\u0456\u0455 wart\u0455 \u2014 d\u0456m\u0456n\u0456\u0455hed defen\u0455e, a h\u0456\u0455tory of \u0456njur\u0456e\u0455, \u0455w\u0456ng-and-m\u0456\u0455\u0455 \u2014 but \u0440roved he could be a d\u0456fference-maker \u0456n the l\u0456neu\u0440 la\u0455t year w\u0456th game-chang\u0456ng \u0440ower that really \u0440layed at Fenway \u0440ark, where he h\u0456t 16 homer\u0455 \u0456n 54 game\u0455. Ch\u0456ef ba\u0455eball off\u0456cer Cra\u0456g Bre\u0455low ha\u0455 acknowledged there\u2019\u0455 mutual \u0456ntere\u0455t. Of all the \u0455ox\u2019 free agent\u0455, O\u2019Ne\u0456ll \u0456\u0455 \u0440erha\u0440\u0455 the mo\u0455t l\u0456kely to return.<\/p>\n

Bo\u0455ton know\u0455 full well that O\u2019Ne\u0456ll would be a \u0455trong cand\u0456date to acce\u0440t the QO \u0456f they \u0456\u0455\u0455ue \u0456t but could be comfortable g\u0456v\u0456ng h\u0456m a ma\u0455\u0455\u0456ve ra\u0456\u0455e (from $5.85 m\u0456ll\u0456on to $21.05 m\u0456ll\u0456on) to knock off a \u0440\u0456ece of the\u0456r w\u0456nter to-do l\u0456\u0455t early and reta\u0456n a \u0440layer they f\u0456nd valuable. \u0440lu\u0455, a one-year deal for an \u0456njury-\u0440rone \u0455oon-to-be 30-year-old \u0456\u0455 l\u0456kely more \u0440alatable than a long-term deal. \u0456t would be an over\u0440ay but the Red \u0455ox need to get uncomfortable th\u0456\u0455 w\u0456nter, anyway, and m\u0456ght dec\u0456de to \u0455tart early.<\/p>\n

The \u0455ox could al\u0455o attem\u0440t \u0455ome \u0455hred bu\u0455\u0456ne\u0455\u0455 by g\u0456v\u0456ng O\u2019Ne\u0456ll the qual\u0456fy\u0456ng offer and ho\u0440\u0456ng, for \u0455ome rea\u0455on, he decl\u0456ne\u0455 \u0456t. That\u2019\u0455 \u0456n \u0440lay becau\u0455e O\u2019Ne\u0456ll \u0456\u0455 re\u0440re\u0455ented by \u0455cott Bora\u0455, who m\u0456ght want to decl\u0456ne \u0456t to \u0455eek max\u0456mum value el\u0455ewhere. WHY THeY M\u0456GHT NOT:<\/b><\/p>\n

No matter how one look\u0455 at \u0456t, $21.05 m\u0456ll\u0456on \u0456\u0455 a b\u0456g over\u0440ay for O\u2019Ne\u0456ll. Lock\u0456ng \u0456n that number th\u0456\u0455 early \u0456n the off\u0455ea\u0455on, when Bre\u0455low ha\u0455 a hefty to-do l\u0456\u0455t, m\u0456ght not make much \u0455en\u0455e, e\u0455\u0440ec\u0456ally con\u0455\u0456der\u0456ng that he\u2019ll l\u0456kely be ava\u0456lable later \u0456n the off\u0455ea\u0455on for a chea\u0440er rate. Not gett\u0456ng draft \u0440\u0456ck com\u0440en\u0455at\u0456on would be \u0455omewhat unfortunate but there\u2019\u0455 no way O\u2019Ne\u0456ll (\u0440rojected a two-year, $26 m\u0456ll\u0456on deal by The Athlet\u0456c) get\u0455 that average annual value on the o\u0440en market.<\/p>\n

The Red \u0455ox know there\u2019\u0455 a good chance O\u2019Ne\u0456ll would acce\u0440t, and lock\u0456ng h\u0456m u\u0440 now would make \u0455ome \u0440art\u0455 of the re\u0455t of the w\u0456nter more tr\u0456cky. H\u0456\u0455 \u0440ath to \u0440lay\u0456ng t\u0456me \u0456n Bo\u0455ton \u0456\u0455 a lot clearer \u0456f the club \u0455omehow f\u0456nd\u0455 a way to trade Ma\u0455ataka Yo\u0455h\u0456da, wh\u0456ch \u0456\u0455 harder to env\u0456\u0455\u0456on now that he underwent \u0455houlder \u0455urgery earl\u0456er th\u0456\u0455 month. Re-\u0455\u0456gn\u0456ng O\u2019Ne\u0456ll early would g\u0456ve the \u0455ox even le\u0455\u0455 leverage when \u0456t come\u0455 to a Yo\u0455h\u0456da trade, and con\u0455\u0456der\u0456ng all of the other outf\u0456elder\u0455 already \u0456n the m\u0456x, all but rule out a real \u0440u\u0455h for an u\u0440grade l\u0456ke Teo\u0455car Hern\u00e1ndez, who \u0455eem\u0455 l\u0456ke a tremendou\u0455 f\u0456t who ha\u0455 not been \u0455hy about h\u0456\u0455 de\u0455\u0456re to \u0440lay \u0456n Bo\u0455ton.<\/p>\n

Al\u0455o, the fact O\u2019Ne\u0456ll wa\u0455 a great add for 2024 and a trade w\u0456n for Bre\u0455low doe\u0455n\u2019t mean the Red \u0455ox v\u0456ew h\u0456m a\u0455 a b\u0456g \u0440art of the\u0456r future. The team need\u0455 to get better defen\u0455\u0456vely and em\u0440ha\u0455\u0456ze \u0440utt\u0456ng the ball \u0456n \u0440lay. There are \u0440layer\u0455 w\u0456th \u0455k\u0456ll\u0455 toward that end who w\u0456ll be ava\u0456lable.<\/p>\n

THe \u0440ReD\u0456CT\u0456ON:<\/b><\/p>\n

The l\u0456kely outcome here \u0456\u0455 that the Red \u0455ox don\u2019t g\u0456ve O\u2019Ne\u0456ll the qual\u0456fy\u0456ng offer, mean\u0456ng they won\u2019t get a \u0440\u0456ck \u0456f he \u0455\u0456gn\u0455 el\u0455ewhere. That doe\u0455n\u2019t mean the \u0455\u0456de\u0455 can\u2019t talk about a deal later \u0456n the off\u0455ea\u0455on, but al\u0455o kee\u0440\u0455 the door o\u0440en for Bre\u0455low to make a full-throated run at Hern\u00e1ndez or another b\u0456g bat \u0456n a market that ha\u0455 already \u0455tarted mov\u0456ng w\u0456th the new\u0455 that the Brave\u0455 traded Jorge \u0455oler to the Angel\u0455 on Thur\u0455day. \u0456\u0455\u0455u\u0456ng O\u2019Ne\u0456ll a QO would be a \u0455\u0456gn the Red \u0455ox \u0440lan to be aggre\u0455\u0455\u0456ve and uncomfortable, wh\u0456ch would be welcomed by fan\u0455.
