Taylor Swift and Jack Antonoff have written more than a hundred songs together. So how do they keep things interesting? Especially when Swift is releasing multiple albums every year \u2014 not only rerecorded versions of her past albums but all-new ones, including this year\u2019s sprawling, 31- song \u201cTortured Poets Department.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI never know what\u2019s gonna happen next,\u201d says Antonoff \u2014 Variety<\/em>\u2019s Hitmakers producer of the decade \u2014 who is not Swift\u2019s only collaborator but has certainly been the one she\u2019s worked with the most over the past 10 years. \u201cIt\u2019s always an off-the-cuff surprise \u2014 dinner at the house that turns into messing around in my little studio that turns into a new idea. It\u2019s utterly organic, which is pretty much how I work with everyone \u2014 like two people flying a plane, you know? It feels like we\u2019re going somewhere together.\u201d<\/p>\n

In yet another year where Swift has been one of the most dominant cultural forces, even a relatively low-key album like \u201cTortured Poets\u201d scored a hit single, \u201cFortnight.\u201d She also had traction with a holdover from last year, the anthem \u201cCruel Summer,\u201d which was originally released in 2019 but scored a second life last year thanks to Swift\u2019s record-crushing \u201cEras Tour\u201d (more on that in a moment).<\/p>\n

Indeed, one way to keep things fresh is to bring in new collaborators like Post Malone, who is on a hot streak of his own this year, featured not just on this song but also Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s \u201cLevii\u2019s Jeans\u201d and with country superstarMorgan Wallen on his own \u201cI Had Some Help\u201d (this year\u2019s No. 2 Hitmakers song). He seems an unlikely presence on such a gentle song as \u201cFortnight,\u201d built around a softly pulsating synthesized bass line from Antonoff, but Post reveals a tender side that one might not have suspected from the face-tattooed hellion rapper behind \u201cBeerbongs & Bentleys.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s once in a lifetime that someone like Taylor Swift comes into this world,\u201d he wrote on social media (with a few emojis added in) after the song was released. \u201cI am floored by your heart and your mind, and I am beyond honored to have been asked to help you with your journey. I love you so much. Thank you Tay.\u201d More characteristically, he told People last year that she is \u201ca fucking hell of a songwriter. Holy shit, amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The remarkable comeback of \u201cCruel Summer\u201d is actually more of a 2023 story \u2014 the song was one of two by Swift on last year\u2019s Hitmakers Top 25 \u2014 but it was big enough to carry into this year as well, largely due to its placement on the setlist of \u201cThe Eras Tour\u201d: After a tiny snippet of \u201cMiss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince,\u201d the real start of the show was \u201cCruel Summer.\u201d<\/p>\n

In June of last year, the song suddenly made a streaming-driven reappearance on the Hot 100. On June 15, Republic announced that \u201cCruel Summer\u201d was going to pop radio \u2014 even though the designated radio single of the moment, \u201cKarma,\u201d from \u201cMidnights,\u201d was still on the rise. (\u201cKarma\u201d didn\u2019t exactly get squelched, in the self-competition; that single made it to No. 2.) \u201cCruel Summer\u201d entered the Top 10 in July and finally reached No. 1 on Oct. 23. As \u201cThe Eras Tour\u201d carried on, so did the song.<\/p>\n
