For the second consecutive offseason, Pete Alonso will test free agency. The New York Mets first baseman had a stellar 2025 campaign, hitting 38 home runs and leading the National League with 41 doubles while posting an .871 OPS, 144 OPS+ and earning his fifth All-Star selection. He\u2019ll be one of the top free-agent sluggers on the market this winter. Here are six teams that will make a play for his services.<\/p>\n

New York Mets<\/h2>\n

After tense contract negotiations last offseason where it seemed Alonso\u2019s time with the Mets was done, the two sides agreed to a two-year, $54 million deal with an opt-out. Now, Alonso is back on the free-agent market. It makes the most sense for the Mets to bring back their homegrown star as Mark Vientos took a step back offensively in 2025 and wouldn\u2019t be a suitable replacement. Alonso is a Mets legend, becoming the franchise\u2019s all-time leader in home runs. It feels right if he finishes his career with the only team he\u2019s known.<\/p>\n

New York Yankees<\/h2>\n

Alonso could pull a reverse Juan Soto, ditching Queens for the Bronx. Paul Goldschmidt is a free agent, and the New York Yankees could consider trading Ben Rice to teams looking for a catcher. A lineup featuring Alonso, Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Jazz Chisholm Jr. would be dangerous and carry the offense deep into October.<\/p>\n

Chicago Cubs<\/h2>\n

With Kyle Tucker all but certain to leave in free agency, the Chicago Cubs will have a big hole to fill offensively, and they can do so by bringing Alonso to the Windy City. In 20 career games at Wrigley Field, Alonso has hit .250 with eight home runs, 13 runs scored and 19 RBI. He would anchor a lineup featuring Pete Crow-Armstrong, Seiya Suzuki and Michael Busch. Even though Busch played first for the Cubs in 2025, he could shift to second for Alonso.<\/p>\n

Seattle Mariners<\/h2>\n

The Seattle Mariners fell one gut-wrenching game short of making their first World Series. With trade acquisitions Eugenio Suarez and Josh Naylor hitting free agency, along with Jorge Polanco, and no guarantee they\u2019ll return, their offensive production will need to be replaced. That\u2019s where Alonso comes in. A top four of Randy Arozarena, Cal Raleigh, Julio Rodriguez and Pete Alonso would give every pitching staff trouble.<\/p>\n

Arizona Diamondbacks<\/h2>\n

The Arizona Diamondbacks have said goodbye to their starting first basemen over the last two seasons \u2014 Christian Walker in free agency and Josh Naylor at the trade deadline \u2014 leaving a glaring hole to fill. The Diamondbacks have failed to reach the postseason since their 2023 World Series appearance and need to upgrade their offense to get back into October. Adding Alonso to a lineup with Corbin Carroll, Ketel Marte and Geraldo Perdomo would do just that.<\/p>\n

The Jake Burger trade didn\u2019t work out for the Texas Rangers. Texas acquired Burger from the Miami Marlins in the offseason after he hit a combined 63 home runs in 2023 and 2024, but his numbers plummeted and he was even demoted to the minors for a time. He finished 2025 with 16 home runs, a .687 OPS and 99 OPS+. Signing Alonso would be an instant upgrade to an offense that needs power.<\/p>\n
