The New York Mets are looking to add to their starting rotation this offseason after a lack of quality options led to the team missing the playoffs.<\/p>\n
David Stearns will have a variety of options via free agency and the trade market, but one option stands out above the rest: Tarik Skubal. Skubal\u2019s situation is complex as the Detroit Tigers are trying to extend him, but the two sides are $250 million apart, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman.<\/p>\n
With the sides that far apart, it opens the door for teams to call in trade proposals. New York Mets insider Will Sammon breaks down what it might take to acquire Skubal in a blockbuster trade.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust to provide a general idea, one industry source unaffiliated with the club speculated Detroit may look to ask for two top-level starting pitchers and a position player prospect,\u201d Sammon wrote for The Athletic. \u201cIn Mets parlance, that means something like Tong, Sproat and prospect Jett Williams. The Mets’ farm system ranks among the league’s best, but such a demand would significantly compromise its health. Perhaps it takes less or involves a major-league player or two; teams in recent years haven’t exactly received jaw-dropping returns for players entering their walk years.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Mets are in an interesting position as Skubal is set to become a free agent after next season, meaning they would give up a major return for just one year of team control. Skubal is a Scott Boras client, so it would be unlikely to see a trade and then an extension.<\/p>\n
One thing for certain is the longer the Skubal saga goes on, the trade rumors will heat up more. It\u2019s unclear if the Tigers will trade him, but the Mets should be relentless in their pursuit of an ace to bolster their pitching staff.<\/p>\n
