The New York Mets are set for a very interesting offseason \u2014 one that could either be a lot of fun or get away from them quickly. From the moment the Mets lost to the Miami Marlins to end the season, it became clear that franchise home run leader Pete Alonso wasn\u2019t going to return.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter the Mets crashed out of playoff contention with a 4-0 loss to the Marlins on Sunday in their final game of the season, first baseman Pete Alonso said he will opt out of the final year and $24 million on his contract,\u201d MLB.com\u2019sAnthony DiComo wrote.<\/p>\n

During the season, it was obvious this was the path Alonso was heading down. He repeatedly refused to commit to anything beyond this year \u2014 something unusual for a player who wants to return.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlaying for this organization, this city – they’ve continued to believe in me. I love playing here. There’s some great guys in this clubhouse, some great people on the staff. Every single day, it’s been a pleasure coming to work and putting on the orange and blue. I’ve really appreciated it and have been nothing but full of gratitude every single day. With winter approaching, Alonso is expected to receive a massive contract, and it seems he already has an idea of his price.<\/p>\n

\u201cPredicted Contract: 7 years, $210 million,\u201d Bleacher Report\u2019s Joel Reuter wrote.<\/p>\n

Alonso is going to get a huge payday \u2014 it\u2019s just a matter of who will give it to him. The Mets know what it will take to bring him back, but Alonso doesn\u2019t seem eager to return on their terms.<\/p>\n
