Taylor Swift\u00a0is clearly not a fan of a certain online theory about how getting married to Travis Kelce is going to hurt her career.<\/p>\n

The singer was asked during a BBC Radio 2 interview with Scott Mills (watch it below) whether her record-smashing new album\u00a0The Life of a Showgirl<\/em>\u00a0was going to be her last now that she\u2019s engaged to the Kansas City Chiefs tight end.<\/p>\n

\u201cTaylor, don\u2019t tell me this is your last album,\u201d Mills asked, in a rather sly bit of phrasing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat? No \u2026\u201d Swift replied, a bit taken aback.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just saw some fans going, \u2018Well, she\u2019s going to get married and then she\u2019s going to have children and [so this is] going to be the last album,\u2019\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cA shockingly offensive thing to say,\u201d Swift replied with a chuckle. \u201cThat\u2019s not why people get married \u2014 so they can quit their job. It\u2019s also, like, music for me \u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think fans were just panicking,\u201d Mills interjected.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, I know, they love to panic sometimes, but I love the person that I am with because he loves what I do, and he loves how much I am fulfilled by making art and making music,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s the coolest thing about Travis. He is so passionate about what he does that me being passionate about what I do \u2026 it\u00a0connects<\/em>\u00a0us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Continued Swift: \u201cThere\u2019s no point in time where he\u2019s going to be like, \u2018I\u2019m really upset that you\u2019re still making the music \u2026 the music thing that I signed up for, that I know you love, I thought you were going to stop doing that \u2026\u2019 We both \u2014 as a living, as a job, as a passion \u2014 perform for three and a half hours in NFL stadiums.\u201d<\/p>\n

The question also glances at something that\u2019s being debated among music critics in the press, and among fans \u2014 namely, is Swift\u2019s happier existence conducive to making great music? (\u201cDo We Still Like Taylor Swift When She\u2019s Happy?\u201d asked a headline in\u00a0The<\/em>\u00a0New Yorker<\/em>, which delved into some of the virulent, and misogynistic, online discourse around the subject.)<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t a topic that\u2019s remotely new or isolated to Swift, of course, as many artists of various disciplines have wrestled with the question of whether misery is a necessary ingredient for great art. In Swift\u2019s case, however, most seem to agree that\u00a0Showgirl<\/em>\u00a0is a clear step up from her melancholy last album, the aptly named\u00a0Tortured Poets Department<\/em>. But it sure seems like a no-win scenario when Swift\u2019s last album was criticized as too downbeat and her latest gets characterized as hindered by happiness.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cool thing about [Showgirl<\/em>] is that I\u2019m in a very similar space in my life as when I wrote it and now that I\u2019m putting it out \u2014 which is a nice when those things are not incongruent,\u201d she said. \u201cThe last record, I was in such a different place when I wrote it \u2014 just miserable. And then when I put it out, I was so happy. So it was like, \u2018I love this art. I love this beautiful art about misery. I, however, am not miserable anymore.\u2019 So it feels weird to talk about the record because it\u2019s like you can be proud of the work, but you can also just not relate to that person you were.\u201d<\/p>\n

Swift was also asked about keeping the album such a closely guarded secret despite flying back and forth to Sweden during her Eras tour to record the project with producers Max Martin and Shellback.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy friends don\u2019t rat,\u201d she explained. \u201cThey do not rat. And you can tell by the amount of stories about me that are out there that are absolutely not true because all of my friends \u2014 all of my friends \u2014 had heard music [from the new album] a year ago. They know what\u2019s going on with me. They do not snitch. It is phenomenal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Showgirl<\/em>\u00a0immediately broke Swift\u2019s sales record\u00a0upon its release last week, selling 2.7 million copies in its first day, which puts it on track to become the biggest-selling album in a single week of all time. Amazon Music also reported it\u2019s their most streamed album of all time for a single day.<\/p>\n
