Taylor Swift\u00a0is responding to the varied reactions to her new album,\u00a0The Life of a Showgirl.<\/p>\n

While speaking on Apple Music\u2019s\u00a0The Zane Lowe Show\u00a0on Tuesday, the singer-songwriter talked about processing the\u00a0mixed reactions\u00a0to her 12th album, which has received both praise and criticism from critics and fans.<\/p>\n

\u201cI welcome the chaos. The rule of show business is if it\u2019s the first week of my album release and you are saying either my name or my album title, you\u2019re helping. And art, I have a lot of respect for people\u2019s subjective opinions on art. I\u2019m not the art police. It\u2019s like everybody is allowed to feel exactly how they want. And what our goal is as entertainers is to be a mirror,\u201d Swift explained.<\/em><\/p>\n

She went on to explain how albums are a \u201creally wild way to look at yourself\u201d and \u201cwhat you\u2019re going through in your life is going to affect whether you relate to the music that I\u2019m putting out at any given moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

With a catalog of 12 albums, Swift says she\u2019s experienced fans expressing love for an album later on, even if they didn\u2019t when it originally released.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd what I often love seeing my fans say is, \u2018I used to be someone who didn\u2019t relate to\u00a0Reputation. And now that I\u2019ve been through some other things in my life, that\u2019s my favorite album.\u2019 Or, \u2018I used to be a\u00a0Fearless\u00a0girlie, now I\u2019m obsessed with\u00a0Evermore.\u2019 We\u2019re doing this thing for keeps. I have such an eye on legacy when I\u2019m making my music. I know what I made. I know I adore it, and I know that on the theme of what the\u00a0Showgirl is, all of this is part of it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

On Friday, Swift made her return to upbeat pop following last year\u2019s melancholy\u00a0The Tortured Poets Department. For\u00a0Showgirl, Swift reunites with Swedish hitmaker producers Max Martin and Shellback. The album sold 2.7 million copies on release day (Oct. 3), making that day alone her largest week ever, according to\u00a0Luminate via\u00a0Billboard.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaking this album was really something I\u2019ve been wanting to do for my entire career because I have always wanted to have fun in this type of way,\u201d Swift told Lowe. \u201cTo have fun, to exhibit mischief and be flirty and fun and make jokes and get to have that side of my personality, that\u2019s a huge part of my personality.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

She noted that even though oftentimes she can be \u201cso serious\u201d and be known for her \u201csad,\u201d \u201ccathartic\u201d and \u201cbreakup songs,\u201d that\u2019s \u201cnot the place\u201d she\u2019s at in her life. \u201cSo what I have left behind is something that really exhibits who I am in this moment [and] pays homage to the most important moment of my life, which was the exuberance and electricity of The Eras Tour,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m so proud of this songcraft. I\u2019m so proud of these melodies and these lyrics and these stories and going in and out of character and kind of playing with your style of speak.\u201d<\/p>\n
