Longtime\u00a0Blue Jays<\/a>\u00a0broadcaster\u00a0Buck Martinez<\/a>\u00a0took some shots at the New York Yankees\u2019 defence earlier this season. Yankees manager Aaron Boone fired back on the eve of their American League division series.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Yankees were seventh in errors in the majors this season and 10th in wild pitches. Their flaws reached a breaking point in July when they committed 11 errors in six games against the Jays.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n

Boone\u2019s team has been better since then, but finished 18th in the majors with minus-six outs above average. The Jays were ninth at plus-15.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, the Yankees, they\u2019re not a good team,\u201d Martinez said during a Sportsnet broadcast on Sept. 9.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t care what their record is. They have a lot of wild pitches, they make a lot of mistakes in the field, and they don\u2019t run the bases well. If they don\u2019t hit home runs, they don\u2019t have a chance to win.\u201dBoone was asked Friday about the improvements the Yankees have made since they last faced the Jays. The question didn\u2019t have anything to do with Martinez, but since it was about defence, Boone decided to wade in.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe times when we were here in the summer, a couple times (we weren\u2019t) at our best certainly and still working through some things,\u201d he said. \u201cI feel like obviously the last couple months we\u2019ve really started to play really well.<\/p>\n

Contrary to some thoughts up here, we\u2019re a really good team.\u201cI know Buck had some thoughts. That\u2019s all I was responding to. He\u2019s wrong. But it doesn\u2019t matter. We\u2019ve got to go play, and we\u2019ve got to go perform, as everyone does this time of year.\u201d<\/p>\n

The war of words between the Yankees and Jays is nothing new. It\u2019s also not the first time a broadcaster has gotten involved. During a July series at the Rogers Centre, YES Network play-by-play announcer Michael Kay said the Jays \u201cweren\u2019t a first-place team\u201d and were \u201cnot playing great baseball.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

That caused an uproar in the Jays\u2019 fan base and Kay attempted to clarify those comments during an\u00a0interview with the Star later that month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cMaybe I articulated it poorly,\u201d Kay said. \u201cBut I was talking about run differential, where they have exceeded their run differential. And in the same sentence, I said the Yankees\u2019 run differential is much better and they have underperformed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
