The New York Mets started the 2025 season on a tear. After signing players like Pete Alonso and Juan Soto over the winter, they were viewed as a contender and were playing like it. They held a 45-24 record midway into the season, but had a rough stretch after the All-Star break.<\/p>\n

They went from having a postseason spot nearly locked up to missing the postseason entirely. They lost their postseason spot to the Cincinnati Reds, who rallied at the end of the year. Now out of the playoffs, it is time to think about the future.<\/p>\n

The Mets could be without Pete Alonso, who opted out of his contract at the end of the season. He is expected to be one of the top free agents on the open market and will likely receive a long-term contract nearing six or seven years.<\/p>\n

Mets urged to consider former Mariners’ slugger as possible Pete Alonso replacement<\/h2>\n

The Mets must start planning their future without Pete Alonso. While it is possible that the club could re-sign him, other players on the open market could serve as possible replacements.<\/p>\n

Paul Goldschmidt will be on the open market, and so will Josh Naylor. Sports Illustrated’s Zach Pressnell argues the Mariners’ slugger could be an excellent option for the Mets.<\/p>\n

“In free agency, the Mets could pursue a deal with slugger Josh Naylor in an attempt to sway him away from the Seattle Mariners. Naylor has been one of the more pleasant surprises of the season, but he’s set to hit free agency at the end of the year. If Alonso and the Mets can’t come to a new deal, Naylor might be the next best option.”<\/p>\n

Naylor has been a joy to watch this season, especially at the plate.
