At first glance, it looks like\u00a0New York Mets<\/a>\u00a0starting pitcher Kodai Senga is playing well. The 32-year-old is 7-6 with a 3.02 ERA over 22 starts, which is the best ERA for a Mets pitcher with 10-plus starts this year.<\/p>\n

However, New York sent Senga down to Triple-A after recording a 6.18 ERA in August. The right-hander notched a 1.26 ERA in April, a 1.89 ERA in May, and a 0.77 ERA in June, but he hasn\u2019t been the same since injuring his hamstring against the\u00a0Washington Nationals<\/a>\u00a0on June 12.<\/p>\n

Senga returned on July 11 and didn\u2019t pitch six innings in a start after that. The 6-foot-1, 202-pounder also gave up multiple earned runs in seven of his nine post-injury appearances.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza revealed on Wednesday that Senga\u2019s outlook isn\u2019t improving, via\u00a0MLB<\/a>.com\u2019s Anthony DiComo.<\/p>\n

\u201cKodai Senga\u2019s live BP session yesterday in Florida went \u2018just okay,\u2019 per Carlos Mendoza,\u201d DiComo reported. \u201cHis velocity was down, in the 93 mph range. There was also some concern that the hot weather was fatiguing him. It remains difficult to see the Mets counting on Senga again this season.\u201d<\/p>\n

That means that Senga likely won\u2019t get to redeem himself after his 2024 playoff performance if New York makes it this season. The 2023 All-Star went 0-1 with a 12.60 ERA in three appearances.<\/p>\n

Mets\u2019 Rotation Shaky Amid Playoff Push<\/h2>\n

Senga is only a part of New York\u2019s starting pitching struggles. Right-handers Tylor Megill (elbow), Frankie Montas (elbow), and Griffin Canning (Achilles) are all out for the season. Meanwhile, right-hander Sean Manaea is 2-4 with a 5.59 ERA in 13 appearances, and right-hander Clay Holmes has had a 4.30-plus ERA in each month since June.<\/p>\n

The situation is so dire that the Mets called up their top three pitching prospects in September to aid their playoff push. They\u2019ve mostly lucked out, as right-hander Nolan McLean is 4-1 with a 1.27 ERA, and fellow right-hander Brandon Sproat has two quality starts out of three outings. However, 22-year-old Jonah Tong has a 5.94 ERA in four appearances.<\/p>\n

On the bright side, the latter pitcher allowed no earned runs in a 6-1 win over the\u00a0San Diego Padres<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday, and he\u2019ll get the chance to build on that against the\u00a0Chicago Cubs<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday night.
