Bulls continue to fortify forward depth with under-the-radar free agent signing

Sacramento Kings v Toronto Raptors

Re-signing point guard Josh Giddey to a four-year, $100 million extension wasn’t the only move the Chicago Bulls made on September 9. The Bulls also signed 6-foot-9 forward Mouhamadou Gueye to an Exhibit 10 contract ahead of training camp.

Gueye most recently appeared in 11 NBA games during the 2023-24 season with the Toronto Raptors. In 10.9 minutes per game, he averaged 2.4 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks while shooting 28.9 percent from the field and going 0-for-3 from three-point range.

Mouhamadou Gueye returns to the NBA after a year-long absence

Aside from a brief stint in 2024, Gueye has primarily suited up in the G-League. Simply appearing in the G-League, let alone the NBA, is a stellar achievement for Gueye.

The 27-year-old forward began his collegiate journey at Monroe University, a junior college in the Bronx, New York. Following an impressive sophomore campaign, Gueye transferred to Stony Brook. Over two seasons with the Seawolves, Gueye averaged 8.1 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game, including a conference-leading 3.1 rejections in the 2020-21 season.

After transferring from Stony Brook, Gueye played his final season at Pitt, appearing in 32 games and starting 28. He averaged 9.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per contest, while also improving his three-point stroke, hitting 36.4 percent on 3.7 attempts per game.

Gueye went undrafted in 2022 but soon joined the Texas Legends, averaging 8.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game in his first professional season. Afterward, he was traded to the Raptors 905, where he enjoyed a career-best season. In 2023-24, Gueye averaged 14.2 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game, earning a two-way contract with Toronto.

After the Raptors elected not to re-sign Gueye, his rights were acquired by the Washington Wizards’ G-League affiliate, the Capital City Go-Go, where he spent the entirety of last season. The New York native put up 10.0 points and 1.1 blocks per game over 34 appearances with the Go-Go.

A year later, Gueye has landed with the Bulls. Chicago now has the maximum 21 players under contract for training camp, which begins on September 29. Gueye joins Caleb Grill and Wooga Poplar on Exhibit 10 deals.

Gueye will battle Grill, Poplar, and the two-way signees—Emanuel Miller, Lachlan Olbrich, and Yuki Kawamura—for a roster spot. Otherwise, he’s expected to play with Chicago’s G-League affiliate, the Windy City Bulls. The 27-year-old wing brings energy, hustle, and shot-blocking to a team in need of those qualities.
